I get really tired of reading these posts about who should be allowed into the forum and who shouldn’t. Why don’t we let pixel pick who gets a membership? LOL
Personally, I read those posts that are interesting, skim through others, and avoid ones that are negative or delusional. It really doesn’t bother me. This should be a safe place, where anyone at any stage of the illness can come to vent, recover and share their experience whether it is good or bad. I am pro-med but I think the anti-med side should have a voice here too. It is up to each individual user to make their own choice about meds.
I think there is a case for restricting people who constantly do this and are obviously delusional to the unusual beliefs section or for mods to be more proactive in moving such posts to separate threads.
I think it can be hard to tell though when someone has some insight and knows they are disrupting a thread (there is intentionality) and when they are not aware of their behaviour..
Thankfully I think we have had very few here with a deliberate agenda like ‘spiritual emergency’ since moving to the new forums.
I might have missed something, but there is nothing wrong with this forum. People talk about their experiences, symptoms, meds and so on. But again I may have missed something.
I don’t see the atheists/agnostics as necessarily saying they have found a successful coping mechanism for schizophrenia in their atheistic beliefs.
They may be saying that atheism/agnosticism is a successful coping mechanism for supernatural delusions (especially painful ones) without saying it is a successful coping mechanism for schizophrenia.
I’ve been on non ■■■■■■■■■ where thread jacking is something you could flag for, and the mods would come clean things up.
I know I had a post removed once for thread jacking, and it raised my awareness of the problem.
Not sure if the flagging system of this forum could function in this manner. I think you also have to make sure people don’t abuse the flagging mechanism for various reasons, however.
While that is probably true, what I have seen some do is call out religious/spiritual or shamanistic treatments as delusional. Truth is these types of practices DO help some people. Maybe not everyone, but some.
I posted some time back that even some psychiatrists had done a study showing prayer and having faith were very positive things for recovery. It was also posted from the NIMH site the statistics of the number of people who used alternative healing methods like meditation, shamanism, and Native American healers.
While meditation might not necessarily involve spirits or a deity, shamanism and Native healing usually does, and often that is a major focus
So it is wrong to dismiss all this stuff as delusional, especially when people have had success with these practices.
I am sorry, but I don’t like the word “nuts”, or “nuttiest” you use. They are very derogatory. I think you should respect more people with problems, like all of us, but also people who share their delusions as well, there is an “Unusual Beliefs” section for them as firemonkey says. I respect that this is a problem on this site, but it would be bad if we rejected these people…
Not surprising, they favor evidence-based systems like science and medicine, and make no pronouncements of absolutes for everyone or “cures.”
Medication, CBT and other therapies are proven successful for many, and science and medicine keep advancing.
I have no problem with spiritual approaches as long as they are viewed as an adjunct to other evidence-based therapies. And, where possible, avail themselves the same scientific scrutiny and study that medication and other therapies endure.
Your conversations with other users about aliens are anything but rational or helpful. You are simply making sick people that much sicker. If you don’t want to improve yourself, that’s your problem. I wish you would stop inflicting it on others. I’m so thankful that people like you didn’t have access to me before I stabilized on meds. You would have done me nothing but harm. My personal opinion.
You will probably benefit from becoming less sensitive, then. Developing a sense of humour is an important component of recovery. Me, I’m nuttier than a pound cake. [grin]
Well, there ARE some members who have had experiences with aliens. I really have only posted about how I have dealt with mine. I do realize some people are tormented by it, and that is not what I wish. I wish healing for anyone tormented by things like that. Also, most of my experiences were not tormenting and actually enlightening and healing.
I have nothing to improve in this area with the exception of honing my knowledge of it, and the ability to keep any negative experiences at bay - which I do quite well at..
Also, it is not so delusional or a fringe segment of the population:
According to a National Geographic survey, 77 percent of all Americans “believe there are signs that aliens have visited Earth”
CNN Poll: Sixty-four percent of the respondents said that aliens have contacted humans, half said they’ve abducted humans, and 37 percent said they have contacted the U.S. government
Also, depending on the survey anywhere from 3.7% to 6% of the US population claims to have been abducted by aliens.
Keep in mind
Schizophrenia is a neurological brain disorder that affects 2.5 million American aged 18 or older or approximately 1.1 percent of the adult population
Anyways, I was mainly talking about strictly spiritual/God type posts where I have been called delusional
First, I’m not laughing at anyone here, I’m laughing with you. Second, I’m not underestimating anyone here. When I offend people, it’s usually because I hold people here to higher standards than many hold themselves to. I see everyone here as having great things to offer. It’s not that I’m discriminating against those with Sz, it’s that I’m not discriminating. Does that make sense?
I just wish that those who seem to have no interest in improving themselves were pushed out of the way of those who do.
Hey, I 'm not coming to this forum to become worse, if that’s what you wanted, you made that! Well done!! You are a hero now that you ‘ve worsen other peoples’ lives!!!
The reason why daimon is still around here is because he “fences” strategically how to influence people not to use meds. Ok, maybe he is what Barbie says, just a mentally ill person. Personally I don’t subscribe to that belief. People that encourage mentally ill people not to take their meds should be banned. I also have lost my faith in this forum. I liked the older forum better even with it’s trolls. Now all you have to do to be a troll here is say you’re mentally ill and that gives them the right of passage to say anything they want.
It just that some of your posts involve reinforcing someone’s belief that aliens are real. For someone mentally ill that’s a dangerous thing to do.
My roommate is not mentally ill but is obsessed with aliens and ufos but it doesn’t affect him because he is not prone to hallucinations or delusions.
If I took on the belief that aliens were real guess what would happen? I’d start hearing them , seeing them, feeling them. Cuz my mind is not stable.
A good example of a movie I just watched that I think puts bad ideas into people’s head is “Jupiter ascending” cultural programming…i can only imagine the young kids that watch these movies what there beliefs are like in 10 years
It’s better for someone that is mentally ill to stop a belief in such things as aliens ufos than to try and prove to them something of no real proof
