How many of you used to sleep to much? How did you overcome it

I am ok now I slept for 14 and a half hours. I still have a lot of negetive symptoms. I do not feel right unless I get around 13 or so hours a night. A little more or less. Somtimes 10hours on occasions 16 hours somtimes also. I go to bed between 12-4am and get up around 3-430pm. I drink coffee when I get up to wake me. I tried lowering my antipsychotic and antidepressant and started feeling more nervous and out of it. I kind of tried praying but once I am asleep thats all I want to do plus when I sleep so much and I wake up for a while I feel ok during the night.

It’s either depression or perhaps you need a med change. I used to never get out of bed, even when I was awake. I got a med change and now I sleep 8 to 9 hours and leave the bed for only sleeping at night. You might try to get out of your late night rut of staying awake all night and get up at 8 a. m. to see if you can break your habit.?

How much coffee are you drinking throughout the day? When do you cut coffee out last thing?

Sleep clinics are very available these day and will do some test to test if it’s problems like sleep apnoea.

Are also some free apps around that will record your sleep overnight and do a similar thing.

Also goggle sleep hygiene. Sometimes it’s just needing to do the basics to get a really good night sleep. .

Step one for me was a med change as well.

Then when I started getting more energy… I was taught better sleep hygiene. Making sure I go to bed at a consistent time… working on getting up at a consistent time…

Even if on my bad days… I’m just up for a few hours… just getting to body used to getting up.

Not reading, eating or being on the computer in bed. That was odd… but it made a difference. Making sure I in fact went to bed… just not sleeping… eating… reading all on the sofa… that was a big help.

Also… spending a bit of time before bedtime to decompress. If I were to go for a run before bed… It would never work because I’d be too amped to sleep. So spending some time to wind down before bed helps.

If I go to bed while I’m still amped up… I’ll end up sleep walking.

I got up at 430pm and drank about two- three cups of coffee and cut myself off because I was getting excited about the superbowl and stuff. Also I stop drinking cups of coffee about 5 hours before i sleep. I think I have sleep apnea but dont want to go in at 9pm and try sleeping for the test, I am so used to staying up untill 1 or lator in the evening.

I currently sleep 4-5 hrs at night then take nap for couple hrs in the evening.

For me its depression excersise seems to help not just to keep me awake for a set time but with the quality of the sleep that I manage

Wish I could help you, I still think I sleep to much. I don’t think it’s medication, it’s more like depression I think. I don’t see a reason to get up, so I don’t. Today I slept more than normal (even for myself) because I wasn’t feel well (allergies were horrible today). I’d say I usually lay down around 1:30, 2am, last night I was up until like 3:30 am, and sleep until about 8 or 9…get up eat breakfast then lay down on the sofa and doze off, but it’s an unsteady sleep I get up every couple of hours or so to like go to the restroom, or just woken up by something or another, like the phone ringing or someone at the door. Seriously there isn’t much for me to do during the day though, so I never really found it a problem. My mind’s more active and alert at night, which is why I stay up so late.

I feel better at night also I can relax more. Its 1:21 am and I hear the neighbors still partying with thier superbowl party.

Medicine change. Taking my night medicine earlier. Keeps me from sleeping till noon.

Yeah it probably bothers my parents the worst, because they want to go places that close by 4pm and stuff and I am still in bed.

I guess it’s easier for people with mental disorder to sleep during the day and feel comfortable at night when the sun goes down.

I tried turning my hours around because I wanted to get a job and but i don’t think this new place I live has any night jobs.

Just sleeping at night instead of my natural day sleep schedule caused terrible nightmares and depression.

Now that im back to being up until 8 am then sleeping I feel way better .

I go to bed quite early, probably at nine pm and i sleep till six am, so it is nine hours. But I am tired during the day, since pdoc upped my meds, so I sleep when I ate lunch, one hour or two. I think it may be cause in your case by your meds. Some of them are quite sedative, especially zyprexa and seroquel.

A bedtime routine, go to bed earlier, Nuvigil.

My husband slept loads on his antipsychotics. He’s just on a antidepressant and melatonin to help him sleep. I think the melatonin causes him to have vivid dreams, but he has always dreamed at night. Try it!!

Not to be argumentive but there has been studies that show melatonin can negatively effect sleep pattern permanently.

If I am going to be able to function during the day, i have to take my bedtime meds between 4-5pm. I fall asleep at 8pm, sometimes i wake up for an hour around 10pm, and then go right back to bed, but if nobody wakes me up for meds, i do not wake up till 10:30am. . I have to have my boyfriend wake me around 8am so i can get my meds or they will refuse to give them to me and then i am without my pain medication till noon time, and the main pain med i will not get again till bedtime. I take restoril for bedtime because without it i am up and down all night long, or i will sit up on the computer all night, unable to sleep at all. If i have an important appointment early in the morning, i skip the sleeping pill, and suffer all night and just keep busy.

Stop your med or change it. See if you can adjust the time you take it to fit a proper sleep diet.
I go to bed at 8:30pm and sleep until four or five. I’m on Latuda and Seroquel at night and Trileptal during the day.

Sounds like its the meds. Without an alarm, I sleep too much but I set an alarm and then drink super strength coffee. I hit the snooze four times this morning if that says anything.

In the summers I sleep like 10 hours and then take a two hour nap in the day.

I do go to bed 10 hours before I plan on waking up, but it takes me an hour to relax and then an hour to go to sleep. I talk to myself for a long time in bed.
