My taste in music has changed dramatically because of schizophrenia. For one thing, music is a lot duller and less vibrant/rich. But my preferences are also just different. I don’t like the same songs or artists in the same way. My taste in music used to be much better.
Has your taste in music changed because of schizophrenia? How?
i use to listen to more music like metallica, system of a down and korn but the music i listen to now is different i like fall out boy and queen a lot more than i use too.
I agree music doesnt seem as rich anymore… Though I was high basically all day everyday for 2 years leading up to my psychotic break… so could just be the lack of marijuana use.
Hmmm… Might just be change in environment for me but I do think SZ has part to do with it. Mostly listened to r&b, hip hop and rap when I lived on my own, since I moved back in with my parents/SZ hit I’d say I enjoy classic rock just as much.
I don’t listen to rap with bad language anymore. I listen to more mellow instrumental playlists now as well. I still have a rock playlist that I love though. But I really like relaxing background music, it helps me quiet a bit.
I listen mostly to Christian contemporary , found it hard to listen to other types of music as I would find unwanted meaning directed at me in the songs. So I like instrumental to . Especially when phsycotic. Can listen to anything now but stick to Christian.
If I am struggling cognitively or overstimulated or have a lot on my mind or it’s been a busy day, I ask my husband to not play music and have them turn it off in the car. Sometimes I enjoy music
I love listening to music everyday. My taste in music hasn’t changed. I used to perceive that songs had special meaning for me. I still get that occasionally. I will hear a lyric in a song and think it was for my benefit but not nearly as much as I did a year ago. Usually, it is just me listening to regular music and enjoying it.
I find that as time goes on I listen to music with actual lyrics less and less. I used to listen to grunge and metal and hip hop, but now I mostly listen to stuff like Aphex Twin and The Prodigy. I think my brain gets hung up listening to the lyrics to songs and I am able to just chill out more listening to this stuff.
My tastes haven’t changed really, I listen to a lot of the same stuff I did as a teenager. But under certain meds music didn’t give me the same feeling it usually does.
I have barely listened to music since my diagnosis. In my car the radio is always off. No music at my house. I have some mp3’s pop music that I sometimes listen to.
I use to love Christian/gospel music but not anymore. One of my favourite gospel rock bands was Petra. I still have some of their cd’s but I never listen to them. So yes my taste have changed and also my frequency that I listen to music.
