So-called schizophrenia changed my musical tastes. WHat about you?

Ever since falling severely depressed last year and being consequently diagnosed with (so-called) late-onset schizophrenia, I have noticed a slight shift in my musical tastes. I used to be a classical and contemporary sort of guy, with the occasional splash of psychodelia thrown in. Now I listen mostly to heavy metal, busy catching up with decades worth of metal history (I stopped listening to metal in the late 80s). Thrash and doom metal are the subgenres I like the best. Have you experienced a comparable transformation in your tastes around the time you got diagnosed?

No, I was always listening to classical, electronic, baroque and avant garde contemporary. I still listen to these genres. But my new obsession is Darkthrone. Raw black metal. Hah

Haha, black and death metal are too much for me, but still lots of good scandinavia groups

Cold Norwegian black metal. Atmospheric, raw, lo-fi, ambient.

What about Finnish “blackened doom metal” bands like Skepticism?

I am clueless about them.

But best to avoid if you’re feeling depressed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKajqoXTH7k

I like skepticism. I’m listening to them now.

I am sza and find that my taste in music shifts according to my moods. When I am depressed I listen to more heavier music, while when I am manic or even just in the middle I listen to more rap and electronic music.

No real change in tastes. I enjoyed what was new music in my day and I still enjoy new music today. I go back and revisit music I liked when I was younger, but I don’t want to be that seventy year old crabbing about how today’s music is all garbage and listening to the same stuff for sixty years straight (like my in-laws). I have also consistently hated rap and hip-hop since they first appeared, so there’s that.

Hip-hop is not all bad!

I can’t handle heavy metal where they scream instead of sing.

I much prefer clean vocals to growling and burping, but I don;t mind old-school screamers like Rob Halford and Leif Edling.

I personally noticed a shift the other way round. With music, but also books and movies, things have to be calm and soothing now. I cant deal with hard and scary stuff anymore.

No much later in life. I like what could be termed old peoples music so calm and peaceful. and hymns. I used to be LED Zeppelin and the wood stock gang, Hendrix, Ten Years After, blusey too

I like a ton of different music but the main question is if I like listening to music at all

No, I did nothing to change your musical tastes.

I just lost my drive and stopped playing piano. Being a pianist has always defined me. But I just don’t want to play anymore. It’s been years.
