Bodybuilding risks

Competitive male bodybuilders exhibit high rates of weight and shape preoccupation, binge eating and bulimia nervosa.

I never understood why people would like to gain muscle and it has nothing to do with sports. Food must get really expensive since they eat so much of it. So much protein. Would I rather look like a bodybuilder than I do now, absolutely. Basically you bulk for a couple months and get pretty fat then you cut the weight for a couple months.

I used to want to be a bodybuilder, but now I’m just weight lifting to prepare for football next year.

What position do you play in football? I played basketball in high school.

I used to be on the line, but ever since I became anorexic I doubt I’ll be there anymore. I had to take last year off due to my illness. I’ll probably be defensive end.

Because it’s darn useful when you’re trying to move something heavy. You also feel better and it helps control weight because muscles take calories to maintain.

Working on getting some muscle mass back. Don’t want to be a human freak, just healthy and able to shift boxes around during the move this summer.

I used to be really into weightlifting back before I started antipsychotics. I used to go to the gym 6 days a week for 5 years straight. I tracked what I ate everyday (calories and macros). I even had a coach that used to look at my body composition every week and make adjustments to how much I ate.
I wasn’t a freak beast or anything like that, but I think you could say I had a nice body.
Then I started invega sustenna and got side effects that messed me up in such a way that I couldnt go to the gym. But hopefully when I switch antipsychotics these side effects will clear and I’ll be back in the gym

Being physically fit has its benefits for the body such as being stronger, healthy and aesthetically pleasing.

@AccreditedPsych I still exercise 6/7 days a weeks while on anti-psychotic medication.

@TheBest Totally agree with you on the bulk up and then lose muscle mass which results in getting fat.

@John_Raven Good luck on your football endeavour as body building fitness is part of the training in that sport.

@shutterbug Shifting boxes, moving something heavy and burn calories are also the reason why I build muscle.

Also worth mentioning that Da Sex is that much better when you’re physically fit. Prime motivator right there.

@anon35453467 that’s great to hear. I will hopefully be like that again when I switch APs

Good luck with football! Just please do your best to protect your head. Don’t let people hit you on the head if you can help it.

In all my years of playing football I’ve never had a concussion

@thebest you were waiting weren’t you. Anyone can take anything to an extreme. I love my body armor, but I wouldn’t classify myself as a bodybuilder…but I know you think it’s weird I lift on APs. Would post more but family issue. And YES food gets very expensive! Word on that!!! But you don’t have to be a supplement junkie. Plenty of protein, fat and carbs from a persons diet. A good multi and fish oil should suffice. But bulimics are everywhere even here, unfortunately. It sux doesnt it…people hating on themselves…

Sounds like you’re trying to rationalize why not working out is right for you by questioning why others do it.

That’s just what people in my life think. People in my life also say they don’t want to be the guy at the gym playing sports when their time is over with.

I think needing an excuse to stay in shape is probably more a sign of laziness than true athleticism.

I would love to be more athletic. The one thing I’ve always wanted to be able to do is run. I mean, RUN. Like a marathon. I’ve never had a heart that would support that kind of aerobic endeavor. I’m jealous of people who can do that, but, I respect the effort they’re putting in. Too many can and just won’t.

I always thought I’d be competing in triathlons when I was in my 30’s. I can barely get off the couch. I really want to be lean and in good shape. I’ll figure it out one day I guess.

If you’re having trouble leaving the room, an aerobics step (large, club style) and some resistance bands would be a good start. I can do some light stuff on an aerobics step once my pacemaker is replaced. It helped me a lot in the past.

It’s probably negative symptoms.
