So I was diagnosed in 2014 and when hospitalized was so out of it they wanted me to go live in an institution. I have done very well on meds now though and I lost the weight I gained on meds, quit smoking, and now volunteer (just 2 hours a week). I am worried I will lose SSDI and not be able to find work (I haven’t worked since the end of 2010. Anyone have any insight on the likelihood? I don’t feel I could handle even part time work now. I see the Pdoc every 6 months.
I think it’s hard to get kicked off of disability with a diagnosed like schiz unless you work too much. If you do decide to go back to work you can always but your volunteer work on your resume.
I think you need to be seen by a specialist at least every 3 months to qualify. I don’t remember where I read that
As long as you have schizophrenia you should be able to stay on ssdi indefinitely I think. I receive Employment support allowance for my schizophrenia and I will continue to receive it until I start working. Having a mental illness means you are incapable of working. I’m sure you could get a sick note from your Doctor to prove this.
Now that you mention it I had a friend with a mental illness he got kicked off of disability because he only saw his dr. Once a year
Going more often can help you.
Yeah, i think when you’re dealing with Social Security, the more paperwork you have the better. You definitely want documentation of your illness.
I called SSDI to check on it and they said frequency didn’t matter but my pdoc said SSDI might require every 3 months so maybe I should bump it up, thanks!
How often are your reviews?
If it’s every 5 to 7 years they don’t expect you to improve.
I used 9 trial work months and I am still on it.
I need to check, I’ve had one review so far at 3 years.
You may have to call SSA or go into the office to find out. Expect to wait on hold for an hour. Or wait in the office for an hour either way.
I worry about that too. I have a review coming up and I am worried. I haven’t worked since 2011 and have’nt been volunteering. If they kick me off I am done. I really don’t see myself working again.
you prob will be fine ive gotten alot better and i passed my review
I think it’s standard to have a review at the 3 year mark.
I was super worried about mine, but it was fine. Still can’t work. Still on meds. Still following doctor’s advice. I heard if you stop your meds/go against doctor’s advice you’re more likely to get kicked off.
I got approved this year and getting a review in january
