Why the mandatory profanity filter?

I know these concerns have probably been raised before, but like…
Why does this site have a mandatory profanity filter?

I’ve heard it’s because the site is supposed to be PG-13, but then why do we have daily posts/threads about erectile dysfuntion, masturbation or genital functions?

If we can expose the kids to that, can’t we also have a setting where we can choose whether or not to have profanity filtered out?

It’s really obstructive to the flow of the post to have words altered or censored.

I don’t disagree with this at all. But it is in the rules not to use profanity. We do use the filter to censor slurs, and that is very helpful.

i doubt any young kids on this

I was around before the filters.

To be fair, I’ve seen kids around 14-15 on here. They’re old enough to have a tolerance for common profanity, but I wouldn’t feel right letting a kid of mine use a forum board where grown men discussed their genital’s functions (or lack thereof) or pleasing themselves.
15 is still underage when it comes to sexual content.

The option to turn it off would actually be a nice feature.

I understand why it’s there but I have agree that it does disrupt flow.

if a person was underage could you apply profanity measures to that account alone? we are mostly adults and can discuss adult topic, you censor everything for those young people alone so they dont see profanity and others are aloud to post freely

I agree with having a profanity filter.

Profanity just lowers the tone.

The way we figure it, issues like erectile dysfunction caused by meds are not something that only happens after you turn 18. They are real medical issues and teenagers should have access to information about why they might be experiencing a problem. We don’t allow super explicit sex talk, but we do allow a healthy discussion of issues that can affect anyone.

Well if it was optional, the person not wanting to see profanity could just switch it on while people who don’t mind could switch it off.
Even words like shite without the e get censored and that’s really not profanity in my book.

Sometimes if people are in an emotional state of mind, they don’t have the spoons to rephrase and censor themselves when venting

I mean, can you imagine being 15, bipolar, just figured out the joys of self love, then suddenly not be able to do it anymore and not know why?

I suspect it’s because they saw my Tumblr and didn’t want me doing the same here.

Also, can you imagine how filthy some posts would be? Mucking through that would kill my brain.

Ooooh. I really want to accept that challenge.

Sometimes when I can’t guess what the profanity filter is censoring, I will abuse my mod powers by clicking the edit post button, and reading it without the censor.

honestly dont think this is the place for a young child i’d put an 18 restriction on this site if it were me, just saying.

Profanity should be allowed since it’s mostly adults on here.

The profanity filter wasn’t put in place because of children, as far as I know. It was put in place because a lot of members asked for it.

its only really an issue if it is used in an insult i think. children should not be on here imo.

Well then why not at least make it optional?
