I got a BA in philosophy with minors in religious studies, music, and indigenous studies. Then i went back to get a certificate in art therapy but dropped out with 2 classes left to go. I was getting straight As, but my mental health tanked. Was psychotic a few times in my undergrad, started college in 2011 and developed psychosis in 2013, took a year off, then graduated in 2016. I seriously busted my butt off, but i feel like the philosophy contributed to my psychosis at times.
I was going to college for Medical Coding & Billing. I got pretty close to finishing, but I had a psychotic break and had to drop out.
I am not longer capable of going to school. Well, maybe someday in the future that will change. Maybe.
That sounds like some heavy dope right there.
Native American studies would be sweet. I have a Native friend actually. Very nice guy. I thought about learning Ojibway as there is a tribal college nearby. After watching Dances with Wolves I think a Native language would be awesome to learn.
Anyways,
Yes I have an A.A.S. in Accounting. But honestly my favorite class out of all the classes was Music Appreciation. That class meant the world to me.
Iāve got a PHD.
ā¦Pool Hall Degree.
I actually took 2 years of the language in dances with wolves (lakota). I loved it but i cant remember much of it. My favorite word was sunka, pronounced shoonka, it means dog.
Kewl!
I bet you had a blast. Were you able to practice with any Native speakers lets say outside of school?
I went to school to be a police officer in the 90s.
Then studied some nursing, but couldnāt finish due to pregnancy problems. I also began studying early childhood education, but my internet couldnāt handle the online requirements.
My aunt is the sheriff of my county plus two uncles who worked in law enforcement.
Sounds like a tough job for sure from the stories they told me.
Yup!! I got into native culture from an ex in HS, he introduced me to some natives in our area, and ive been in contact with them since and periodically go to their ceremonies. All of the songs they sing in sweat ceremony are in lakota, and they all know a great deal of how to speak it. I actually had a naming ceremony done by my friend who is now a chief. My name was āwalks through the light womanā
That is amazing.
We used to have Ojibway students come to our school and give us a demonstration of their ceremonial dances. It was sweet to experience it for sure.
Native cultures are beautiful thats for sure. I just love how lots of natives walk the āred roadā and fill their life with spirituality.
Supposedly my great-great grandpa was born on the Rosebud reservation in the Dakotas.
But I guess many European Americans have stories of having indigenous ancestry.
My mom said her grandpa was half Native. You can sorta see it in my mom but not me or my sister.
Damn straight.
I think my Native name would be ācorn on the cobā.
I started attending college in 1983, 3 years after being diagnosed. Attended community college for a year, then stopped. Started up again in 1990 and attended for 5 years; I was only taking two classes at a time. I didnāt start college again until 2009 when I started taking online classes. Iāve been taking one class at a time since then, I need one class to graduate and Iām signed up for it this Fall.
Awesome!! What will your degree be in?
Humanities. It wouldnāt get me a job but a college degree looks good on a resume. IDK, Iām 61 and at this point Iām mainly getting my degree for personal satisfaction.
I hear that. I mainly went for the experience and to just learn more about things i love. Though i wanted to be a professor, i still do, just dont know if i can handle going back for a masters, and not even sure what id want to teach.
