Which is worse- depression or schizophrenia?

I have had both, major depression and schizophrenia and I tend to think depression is worse. I have also had mania in the past and that’s different than just depression, the high followed by a low. It seems to me schizophrenia diseases are chaotic thought and depression is just bad feeling. What do you think?

I think depression is worse, cuz I am fully cognizant when I’m depressed and realize how shi$$y I feel, whereas when I’m psychotic I don’t necessarily experience the depth of my thoughts and emotions. I think mania is a lot of fun, but ends up causing problems (especially financial).

i felt a severe depression while withdrawing from prozac and i think it was…no not worse…not better. just different. i feel awful when i think people are after me to do terrible things to me. and i felt awful withdrawing from prozac. both make me feel suicidal. both feel terrible. i cant pick one. theyre just different. i have had some psychosis that wasnt as bad as the prozac withdrawal tho. just depends how bad the delusion is.

I suffer from clinical depression and paranoid schizophrenia. The schizophrenia put me in the hospital for 8 months and a group home for 5 years and multiple other group homes. Schizophrenia also caused intense suffering for 2 1/2 years. The depression makes me feel sad. I vote from experience that schizophrenia is worse.

I have stopped focusing on what is worse.

I now focus on what can make any of these or any illnesses better.

I focus on all the good examples of others who overcome and deal with chronic illness in a ways that show me a ways.

Way worse the depression for me.

I tend to deal better with the positives and I found zyprexa works great for me. That depression though bites biscuits.

I think I’ve been on probably near 10 antidepressants till I somehow hit effexor. Just works but it’s brutal and I’ve been on big doses.

Depression is so common with sz anyways for most so it’s an important question for our community.

I think it depends on how good you respond to an AD or AP.

My Wellbutrin works more effectively on me than my Invega.

That being said, I’ve been depressed for the last 11 days and it’s no fun.

Schizophrenia. My depression worsened when I became schizophrenic.

SZ worst I would definitely trade

I think it depends entirely on the person and the individual experience.

I will say depression. I have been depressed plenty of times, the last time for 3 years due to olanzapine. And I could not find the motivation to do anything. Sometimes I don’t Shower or change my clothes for a week and didnt do any housekeeping. I was not able to feel Joy or to see any point in living. I didnt even care for my son.
With psychosis I do feel that my thoughts and emotions are chaotic and are distracting me, but Im much more active and I am able to feel my emotions.

I’m unsure. That’s tricky. I have experienced both. Both have been very destructive to my life. Sz more so by far I’d say though. But depression feels awful and really sucks too. Hmm.

I’m surprised to see so many people say depression here

Having Schizoaffective Mixed type I experience both schizophrenia (psychosis) and depression.

Yes depression can be crippling but it doesn’t land me in the hospital for over a month, psychosis does.

Schizophrenia is a lot worse for me than depression

Depends on symptoms and outcomes. Depression can cause suicide and permanent disability from failed attempts and lack of self care. Schizo can cause homicides and suicides as well as ruin lives etc. No general conclusion can be reached

The answer of ChatGPT:

Both depression and psychosis are serious mental health conditions, and it’s challenging to definitively say which is “worse” because they are distinct in their symptoms and impact individuals differently.

Depression is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. It can lead to severe emotional suffering, a decline in functioning, and, in some cases, can be life-threatening due to the risk of suicide.

Psychosis, on the other hand, involves a disconnection from reality, often manifesting as delusions (false beliefs) and hallucinations (false sensory perceptions). Psychosis can be distressing, disorienting, and may lead to behaviors that are a danger to oneself or others.

The severity of these conditions can vary greatly from person to person. What’s important is to seek professional help and support for either condition as early as possible, as both can significantly impact a person’s quality of life and well-being. The choice of which is “worse” may be subjective and dependent on individual experiences and perspectives.

I can only say from my own experience.

Sz is worse. Or rather, psychosis NOS.

Depression is also terrible but psychosis is just pure hell.

At least with depression I still feel like there’s ppl on the planet aside from me, etc.
