Do I have to buy an ancestry DNA kit?
I don’t know my dad and I would like to find out what my heritage is.
You would have to buy a kit. The main sites are 23andMe,Ancestry DNA, My heritage and Family tree DNA.

Bleh. No one is getting my DNA without a warrant. I’m certainly not paying to give it up.

It’s not an exact science as I understand the modern tests. I’m sure they’ll improve over time and I’m sure there’s results that may not be too accurate.
They’re much better at a Europe-Africa-Asia etc level than at a Belgian-Dutch-German etc level. The best guide currently to your ancestry is via your cousin matches.
