The main causes seem to be genetics and drugs (marijuana and psychedelics.)

I question how much drug use had to do with it. I never used drugs

conflicting info on the web as to whether or not it is caused by drug use. Here is what WebMD says

I think mine was triggered by lsd use but I’m not sure. I got a lot of anxiety and depression issues that got worse suddenly after taking it the first time.

It runs in the family. My grandmother on my father’s side was committed to a mental hospital and died there. There are other various mentally ill people I am related to.

My mother, although she denies it, is sick herself. I developed it as a child somehow. I was 8 years old when I started hearing voices and seeing things.

Idk.
I do know though that at least one uncle experienced psychosis I had a day where I took drugs and I am quite stress prone if not careful

Genetics. My sister had it as a child but learned how to hide it

Trauma. Medication use might have contributed to it.

I think for me it is genetics. My grandfather’s cousin had it, my uncle has it and my father has bipolar. My mom has severe anxiety. I was born with it. Always heard voices and paranoid. It just wasn’t until I got in my teens, I started getting cognitive symptoms, more hallucinations and no sleep

Drug use (weed) triggered the first episode psychosis as it was diagnosed but drugs were quit and after 5 years of hallucinations i got a sz diagnosis and slowly we have been finding things out about other more distant family members also my dad had a episode i think but was never diagnosed with anthing dont think he even talked to a doctor he had some stress going on but dont think he was hallucinating just paranoid with a specific delusion someone put in his head.

In conclusion drugs and genetics.

One of my professors once said all cases of schizophrenia are caused by teratogens during pregnancy, which cause epigenetic changes, eventually leading to psychosis in adolescence or adulthood.

He had quite a lot of bold opinions. But I think this is pretty close to the truth. Schizophrenia probably begins in the womb.

This is “how you got schizophrenia”, not “how you got food poisoning”

My mother describes her pregnancy with me as practically ideal, while my sister was a difficult pregnancy. I developed schizoaffective disorder, and my sister didn’t. Who knows? :man_shrugging:

My grandmother on my dad’s side has it. My dad has… something. Probably not sz but has a deep mistrust of everyone hes not related to.
I did lsd and triggered deeper emotional issues and had psychosis after several months of that. Later on weed and more lsd made it even worse.
