What books are you reading or listening to folks?

I just charged my under utilised kindle and got motivated to start a new book.

“Neuromancer’ by W Gibson.

It is a cyberpunk set of books and it is going well so far.

Going to see if I like it as much as ‘The Culture’ by Banks.

Lots of futuristic stuff in it and it reads relatively easily.

What are you reading? give us a synopsis while you are at it too for interest.

:books:

I’m listening to audiobooks , but they’re all a bit triggering for people here. In fact the last time I answered the question “what are you reading”, my post got deleted :sob:.

A neuroscience books that shares the neurobiology of how our brains work, and what that means for.free will. The author believes that we dont have any.

That sounds fascinating as I have tried to explore the concept myself.

I came to the conclusion that we live in a sandbox reality and our free will is partial as we are are only given a set number of choices. We are limited in that respect and free will is mostly illusory.

Anyway that is my two cents.

Yes,that is true. I’ve read the evidence in ‘determined’ but I still feel like I had free will when I made my biggest mistake. But he says the sense of agency is an illusion, yes you may choose to do ‘x’ but how did you become the type of person who chooses to do ‘x’?

Sapolsky says it is a series of experiences that range from 1.second.ago to millions of years ago that form out choices. And that there is nowhere in the brain that is not.determined by the environment or genes, no where to shoehorn in free will.

Yes I feel this way too.

It is a ride, and when one sees oneself as an observer it becomes easier. I have been watching ‘the great Western philosphers’ which was an old show on the 1980s that analyses loads of them. It is really insightful.

Anyway, ‘they’ often cling to there being free will with the odd exception but they are mostly of relgious persuasion and are burdened with its guilt and ‘morality’ saying it stems from the mind and within; ignoring chidhood indoctrination and lifes events as a catalyst to how we behave.

The idea that the universe and people are inherently good also is their premise.

It is not. People like to live in delusion about it, but I suppose that is their ‘ride’ in the universe but they think they are controlling it.

I guess when you’re lucky it seems like your the captain of the ship. Until life knocks you down.

I dont know why I behaved as badly as I did. But if I add up around 40 or so things that were going on for me at the time, I can kind of see where my actions came from. Add to that being dropped on my head as a baby, having delusions and other thing I wont mention. .. maybe there is room to forgive myself.

I kinda get what you mean by becoming the observer though. When I was more spiritual, I was in that space and it seemed like everything my family said or did was scripted. Also I felt like I was still and not moving and that the illusion of time and space moved around me, the feeling scared me and so I ended up very badly making it so that I would ‘never be spiritual again’

I can’t help believe in free will because I used to believe in the law of attraction and it seemed like I was manifesting stuff. Now I see it was all coincidence or maybe people trying to make me feel special or something. That’s my logical mind anyway.

I guess my time being spiritual has wired to make me believe in free will. but i don’t believe in the law of attraction anymore. But in the past i achieved all of my goals, studying art, making great art, travel, fell in love and got the spiritual experiences i was hoping for, so i really felt like i was making stuff happen.

Maybe I am starting to believe Sapolsky more, now, though. Like I always wondered why I self sabotagued so much. And these days i know i can’t force myself to be bright and bubbly and brave - its all chemical…

Reading the Zits cartoon series. lol it’s a great read while in the hospital and doesn’t require much brain cell activity.

I have been hopelessly immersed in the books written by Preston&Child. They are usually crime mysteries with a fantastical flair. The last one I read was Diablo Mesa. With a crime being unearthed from the 40s and also an archeologist looking for the Roswell crash site. Was pretty dang good.

I’ve read probably 5 of their books in the past month or so. They also have books with a returning peculiar FBI agent named Pendergast and I especially love the books that involve him and his story line.

I will be starting a new Pendergast book tomorrow if I have time. The title is Bloodless.

Ive got a copy of necromancer here at home. Love the vibe of it. But have never managed to get very far through it. Becuase of the drugs/amphetamines in it. Makes me want to go get some irl haha. Ive had a few phases of having problems with speed and stuff so.

Ive been wanting to read heaps lately but find it hard to stick to one book. I end up switching between 3 or 4 books at a time and then just stop. But currently im getting through Dune. Got a nice Dune 1,2 and 3 trilogy in one book edition. Very heavy. Could knock someone out with it haha. And also reading the empire of the vampire trilogy by jay kristoff. Almost finished book 2. Already have a copy of book 3 ready to go.

One of my goals is to get back into reading this Fall/Winter and I have my eye on a book called, Art! Trash! Terror! Adventures in Strange Cinema.

I recently got a little reading lamp light that you can hook onto your book. The lighting in my bedroom is very dim at night making it difficult to read.
