Do the laws of physics and neuroscience disprove free will?

My point in posting this is to try to show that the argument against freewill is undecided at BEST.

I didnt want to muck up my other thread with a big argument with @labratmat . so lets have this discussion here if you want to. There are lots of articles and opinions on both sides. But saying it settled and proven that there is no free will is hardly accurate.

The earth never had a choice on whether to spin or not  or did it have a choice? :smirk:

"And unfortunately for popular-science conversation, Schurger’s groundbreaking work does not solve the pesky question of free will any more than Libet’s did. If anything, Schurger has only deepened the question.

Is everything we do determined by the cause-and-effect chain of genes, environment, and the cells that make up our brain, or can we freely form intentions that influence our actions in the world? The topic is immensely complicated, and Schurger’s valiant debunking underscores the need for more precise and better-informed questions."

Not debunked really at all. More profound more like.

It doesn’t realy matter whether you or I believe in free will or not. It is pointless arguing it as it makes no discernible difference to your or my life whatsoever.

For me, it is not up to ‘you’ or ‘me’ what you believe or do. It is senseless to me to get heated over it.

It is an interesting debate to have though.

I wonder if my atoms want to take this dance or not? Much like the planets cruising through the universe, like the particles we are made up of doing the same. Only the warped mind’s perception of what is going on around us interpreting it as though our ‘I’ is making the decisions all along.

Like our eyes only see a certain colour spectrum, what colours are the actual world around us? Our ‘I’ is just as skewed and biased to only see a world that contains certain colours and think that this is the world.

To me, our free will is just another bias that our limited spectrum allows us to navigate the world around us. A mere delusion to cope with a what is infact a far larger universe which we cannot comprehend.

The no free will argument is awfully convenient for some. Don’t like how your life turned out? Well, you had no free will so all those bad decisions and that bad luck weren’t your fault.

This is why I called it a philosophy in the other thread. It seems like more of a choice you have made to believe it than anything based on science. And maybe I am guilty of making a choice to lean towards the other end.

I’m not heated over it. It’s just that you post about it constantly as if it were fact there is no free will and its been proven when it is undecided at best.

No offence of course.

This debate has been going on for a very long time, and it really isn’t solved.

Sometimes we formulate our idea of the world based on whats happened to us. Maybe thinking you have no free will is a coping strategy for the bad things. And the idea of having free will is a way of motivating yourself towards potential change and action.

I think we have free will. The physics, chemistry, biology, the confluence of our genes and environments, leads us to have impulses. But, each of those impulses is either affirmed/denied by us. Therefore, the people who practice self-control have more choice and are not driven by their impulses. So, yes, for every impulse, there is a choice.

For instance, take the example of losing weight. You feel hungry, but you may choose to make the right choices and keep a balanced diet that leads to weight loss. The more you practice self-control, and eat right/less, the more you lose weight. However, once you veer in the other direction, you lose self-control and gain weight. While you may have no control over your impulses, you can train them by affirming them or denying them.

What if the universe has a direction and each of has has the free choice to participate or not.
If you want to participate, you might get certain triggers that you might follow impulsevly, thinking was your will.
If you choose not to participate, you might get other triggers.
By triggers I meant impulses of various types.

In a way, it almost seem there’s no free will. One can abstain using free will.that’s all.

Every living thing has boundaries. Therefore, free will is the idea that boundaries can be changed. Man has widened his boundaries ever so boldly. But even boundaries have boundaries. Therefore free will is not. A delusion But rather a choice in making the decision of an illusion. Which is far in a spectrum. With it own boundaries. And small terms. D*** if you do d*** if you don’t.

There is no free will, because the word free is giving something without expectations.
We always plan and execute in something in return,
Energy can be only transferred,

Free will is something created in books to give hope.

Example : i have the will power to turn earth in anti clock wise  its after all in ones perceptions.

Hey wait free will does exit. See i am still typing …
