Standing in the corner with my fingers in my ears going “NA NA NA NA NA NA NA” as loud as I can.

Jk. I have no idea. I usually just take a nap or something if I need a reset.

Some of mine have already been mentioned, but two of my big ones are YouTube playlists and a converted walk in closet that is now my safe space.

I have multiple playlists on YouTube to keep my mind occupied when I have a hard time. My favorite is my Happy one, which has nothing but short animal story videos by channels like The Dodo and GeoBeats Animals. My favorite channel is Maine Coon Central, which is run by a woman in the UK with a sweetheart of a cat who is super affectionate. I know it sounds silly, but I love watching him being so loving with his people, and doing things like purring really loud and making biscuits with his paws. I had a very sweet Maine Coon named Mondo Kitty who passed away in August 2021 and watching Pippin warms my heart. I miss Mondo but am not getting another cat so I enjoy Pippin.

My psych nurse recommended that I create my own happy place, and the only place to do that in our tiny apartment was to convert our walk in closet. I have a long history of soothing myself in closets, so I did things like put our stuffed animals in there, my photo albums, my yummy smelling lotions for scent therapy, taped 64 photos on the wall, put cushions in there to sit on, and that’s where I keep my headphones to listen to my bilateral stimulation music. I just made the space about 10 days ago but I love it. It means living with four Rubbermaid containers in the recessed corner of the bedroom but that’s okay. My husband doesn’t mind, he just wants me to be healthy.

I use Acting as my main coping skill, Fake It Till You Make It. Going to the supermarket and pharmacy and buying a few things. Cleaning up the kitchen and taking the garbage out. Keeping a clean shaved face makes me feel sane.

I’ve experienced something maybe you have experience with. Playing a musical instrument by notation and not innovation or classical music vs. popular. I wish I’d learned to innovate more but I just enjoy the classic pieces of sheet music I have. I’ve become too good for rock and roll.
