We need a chat room (instant messaging)

Chat rooms are an administrative hell, particularly mental health chat rooms.

Hey,

Yeah an amazing mess but done properly it’s an amazing thing. Sadly MI chatrooms got taken over by people looking to exploit the punters. It became a problem when it was considered we weren’t capable of looking after our own business…it was absolute rubbish!

In the old days ( totally unmoderated) it was a community. It was decided by the punters. If you got flamed or trolled or whatever you’d walk away or encourage them to leave communily. They got bored and it worked wonderfully.

It’s bullshite to say it is hard to moderate such venues. It’s important to say it’s hard to find appropriate moderators who are schizophrenic and care. IT becomes a problem when pervs are allowed to run things…or those who don’t have schizophrenia…wtf are they doing hanging around a mental ill site anyways but Chicko likes that shite!

Brian. You didn’t even try to help us when we reached out to you to help us against a group of moderators who had other idea and half of which was sexually trolling the website. Yeah we have breakdowns and we have problems but a thousand people asked you for help and you palmed us all off saying we weren’t worthy of listening too. We were schizophrenics who at a schizophrenic website couldn’t be right and were all wrong. You sold us all out to protect your moderators who could do no wrong but who used and abused us abominably!

A friend in the struggle,

rogueone.

When I’m in a chat room I have the same problem I have talking in person. I can’t think of what to say, at least not quickly enough to have a spontaneous conversation. That isn’t typical of sz’s. It’s more unique to me.

I find the speed ‘conversation’ flows and my thinking/typing speed make it a difficult experience, especially if it’s busy.
Often the conversation has moved in a different direction and my reply when it comes seems out of place.

Yeah the site is good as it is. Chat rooms are a mess.

Yes - we just don’t have the money or time or manpower (moderators) to support a chat room. And I thinkt hat these forums can be pretty close to a chat room for people.

And no - nobody makes any money off Sz.com - it is unfortunately something that just costs a lot of money, generally. Occasionally we get a little money to help cover costs - but not in the past few years.

There is no reason why any poster proficient in such matters can’t set up a chat room, and then inform interested people of the link by PM.
It doesn’t have to be directly connected to here.
I think if sz.com was going to reintroduce chat it would have happened some time ago.

I would donate money if there was a paypal button but as it is it is virtually impossible if you are outside Canada/USA.

Yes - we had it for a number of years actually - and it became a major source of poblems. People always being mean to each other because moderation wsn’t there all the time - it just made a lot of people upset and caused more trouble than it was worth - so I closed them down.

Thanks - but I’m talking to some companies and hope to have a little advertising money soon to help pay the bills.

mind if I ask what some of the cost is?
I am just curious what drives costs of running a high traffic forum entails

is it to do with forum operating system, bandwidth usage,or storage space, design?

Mostly server costs - one server for the main site, one server for the forums, plus related monthly fee services like for the mailing server (for mailing out messages from the forum), etc. It adds up quickly.

Thanks. Appreciate your work so we can use this forum!

A different server for each service? That seems odd. You should be able to run all 3 services on a single server. Forum and main site definitely should be on the same server. As for mail, I don’t see why you need more than a private domain name and an email service that most host providers give for free.

I am guessing the services are high enough volume that they beat the snot out of a shared server package.

Yes - we’re pretty high volume - and greater risk for issues. We send out about 50,000 email messages a month, 15 gig of traffic on the main server. Forums are not heavy in traffic but you start mixing Ruby apps/docker, etc. with Apache-based server sw and things get complex and a single point of failure. You want some load sharing in any environment.

What if a few of us just went to a chat room together?

We could create a username thread where we tell each other which names we had on a site. Normals would be a problem though. They’d likely start stuff. If we created code words it might work.

I’m down if anyone wants to try it.

Yea I have that problem in real life. I used to be quick with the comebacks. But now I’m like 500 mS between my ears and my brain. It’s like playing a game with lag. I’ll never win.
So now I just listen to other people and study them.

Is that true? Quitting pot (I assume that’s what you mean by green man)? Makes a difference? My son smokes a lot. I read conflicting theories and some with Sz say it helps them, others say it makes them more paranoid or delusional. It’s such a complicated illness!! I don’t know what to do about his pot smoking. He drinks a couple beers a day, but not more than that. Before his break, he was getting downright drunk! I kinda feel like he really doesn’t have many pleasures right now. I’m hoping to talk him into some CBT. Right now he just isn’t ready to try anything.

I’ll tell you why I’m “hanging around this site.” My son is schizophrenic and his cognitive functioning is such that he wouldn’t really know how to navigate a site like this. I am here to learn. There is a family category, which is where I usually stay. This is my first time in this category. Sorry. I’m not trying to be rude, just honest.
