I was working with a pizza delivery operation and there was this girl who worked there named Julie. (name changed) She was a little overweight, but she was confident and cocky. She was also competent. For some reason, I don’t know why, she got sent to the mental hospital where she was put on medication. This was in 1993. She became huge. She always had this little, joyless smile on her face that said she’d lost all belief in herself. I’d be willing to bet she had been put on a typical med. When I was on the Haldol shot I was totally demoralized. I worked part time and lived with my mother. Life was joyless. That is what typical med’s do to too many people. Now I am on Geodon and Seroquel, and I am much happier. I don’t know if typical med’s keep people out of the hospital more. The atypicals sure are easier to tolerate. Now I have some kind of hope. I think if I was faced with having to take Haldol again I would choose to live on the street and be psychotic.
I have been on 4 atypical’s and 2 typical’s and it’s all been the same s**t to me. Never liked any of them.
The med’s affect different people differently. One time I talked to this guy who liked Haldol, and had a harder time with Geodon. I think that is an exception though. For the most part, for most people, the atypicals are easier to tolerate.
I know that some people swear by the effectiveness of the typicals, but I was placed on a high dose of a typical - Navane, it was my first antipsychotic that I was on - man it was very effecive but I was dazed and zombified on it.
The typicals still have a place in todays world.
I need an antipsychotic, but Man am I ever tired of them
I’m one of those people who prefers Haldol over Geodon. Or any other atypical, that is.
I find that amazing.
Thats exactly the way I felt when I was on Clopixol depot for two years. After that I did much better on Olexar and after that Abilify. My negative symptoms are more bearable since I’m on the atypicals.
Interestingly enough, typicals help me more with negative symptoms. Everyone is wired differently, as they say.
I’m happy for you @alien99 that you have a med combination that works for you. Clopixol was a great med for the positive symptoms and it pulled me through hell so I’ll never downplay any typical ap.
I agree, the typicals do still have a place in modern medicine.
