Two weeks quit. 171 cigarettes not smoked so far. Almost 7 packs. Anyone have tips on staying quit? I’m doing good, but it could always be easier
It’s easy to quit… I’ve done it many times…
A book to read is Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Alan Carr. It most likely will reinforce the not smoking habit. Sip icy cold water when the craving hits. I tend to buy shelled peanuts when I try to quit as it gives my hands something to do when I eat them. But I also roll my own so may not apply. Whole raw carrots are anther one to eat. Mainly because they take forever to eat, keep you busy and are good for you. Sugar free gum is a must also.
The idiot’s guide to stop smoking suggests using two of the known methods to succeed ie patches and the gum. Rather than just using one. From a google search awhile ago there has been advances on meds used for addiction in mental ill patients that does include smoking. In the past the meds used for stopping smoking have conflicted with some of our meds. So do talk to your doctors and see if they can help in that area as well.
The irony is I’m smoking now while giving advice on how to quit. Chances are I won’t be long behind you though, as is on the cards.
I’ve never been addicted to cigarettes, but my boyfriend is, and I see the struggles he goes through when he wants to quit. I wish you the best of luck. @dreamscape’s suggestions sound great. Give evvvvvvvvvvverything a try.
quitting is a continous journey, just be mindful and put in effort you will suceed, but be patient
That made me smile. Thank you.
It’s a hard path and there are a lot of options. Just like everything else, you have to find what works for you.
some people can cold turkey it… other’s use the gum/patch method.
I’m tapering. Tomorrow I cut down again… to one a day.
Good luck and hope it goes easy for you.
best of wishes…you have done wonderful so far…just keep doing it…
Another smoker here with a cig in my hand as I type…
I quit once for 8 years. Something that helped, though you’re probably too far for this, was to empty all my ashtrays and any leftover smokes or tobacco and dump them into a large coffee can. Then fill the can with water until it’s a sick disgusting sludge. Put the lid on it and every time you feel like smoking just open the can, take a good look and a big whiff, and remember how horrible the habit is. It helped me.
today marks five weeks without a cigarette for me. I recommend nicotine gum. I woke up at 9am and im on my third piece, its 1211 right now. I really advise the gum.
Also keep the gum around for things that you usually crave cigarettes with, like caffeine, after a big meal, first thing in the morning, sex, long drives, places like bars or pubs, visiting with friends who are smokers, whatever you associate smoking with.
I bought a carton the day before I decided to quit. Now I have ten packs of cigarettes around. lol
Just remind yourself that you CANNOT JUST HAVE ONE. If you smoke just one, you WILL go back to however much you had been smoking. My psychiatrist, other people too, have told me that. My psychiatrist smoked a pack a day when he was young, just like I did several weeks ago.
Just weight the pros and cons. Not having to step outside for five minutes is a big plus. Not smelling and tasting like an ashtray is a big plus. Being able to sit indoors for extended periods of time is a big plus.
