So it’s been a month since I’ve started my diet and went on diet pills. I’ve been eating 1200 calories a day except rare occasions where I’ve cheated. My scale shows I’ve lost 6 pounds. That’s the same amount I lost the last time I went on a diet. We’ll se what the doctor’s scale says but it should basically be the same. Next month I’m going to eat 1400 calories a day and walk everyday and see if I can trigger my metabolism to burn more. But I was too hungry at 1200, I can’t go lower and it obviously isn’t working well. I really like using myfitnesspal to track everything I eat and I think it’s a good idea whether you’re on a diet or not so you know you’re getting balanced nutrition.
You’re losing at a healthy, safe pace. I say keep up what you’re doing
What diet pills are you on?
I’m taking a pill called Phentermine. It’s very mild and hardly helps.
I would like to be losing more like 10 pounds a month.
I’m going to the doctor Monday and willed be weighed. Right now I’m 251, but I hope to be under 250 when weighed. I was 294 last March.
You can get gallstones if you lose fast, plus it’s a higher risk of loose, excess skin. Plus, there’s a higher probability of gaining it all back and then some. Adding exercise is definitely a good idea though
Nice work @anon54988740
I had my gallbladder out when I was 25, but I appreciate what you are saying.
I am on a 1200 calorie diet and I find I am constipated since starting it. I go like once a week now and its uaually after I take milk of magnesia to help me. I find that since I am eating less I am going less. Do you have this problem? Or anyone else have this problem?
I go less now that I eat less. But I’ve always had problems with going.
I find that I don’t go very often but I’m not super dooper constipated more than my normal. Milk of magnesia is a good choice in my opinion to solve the issue fast. Are you getting enough veggies and fruits? Are you drinking enough water? I read something that said the longer a bm stays in your rectum the more water is absorbed from it thereby causing constipation if held too long, so if you don’t have enough bulk to move it that might be why you are constipating. Try some metamucil to bulk out your bowel movements.
I eat alot of frozen veggies but thats it. I will have to give the metamucil a try. I just hate the feeling of having poo stuck in me for 5 days. Before I use to go every other day. But if I eat more calories I gain more. Oh well.
I had that problem when my Carb intake was low… Yes… Didn’t like it…
From what I hear, the slower you lose weight, the more likely you’ll succeed in your diet. Losing about 1 1/2–2 1/2 lbs a week are pretty good, safe, rates to lose. From my limited knowledge, 1200 calories a day is too little.
When I say “limited knowledge” my expertise and claim to fame is reading Dr. Atkins best-selling book on dieting. The diet has fallen out of favor but he had some really good scientific information about the science of dieting in his book. I lost 60 lbs on the Atkins Diet, I was on Resperidone at the time.
I also tried Weight Watchers (which I didn’t like) and a little known diet similar to the Atkins Diet but less restrictive which I lost about 65 lbs.
The thing about diets in general is that even so-called experts in the field of nutrition can disagree on what constitutes a good diet. In the 1970’s when I was trying to eat healthy and take care of my body, the prevailing wisdom at the time was that a diet with lots of carbohydrates was a good way to eat.
Thus you had doctors telling you to eat lots of bread, pasta, and fruit and rice. And to count calories. And that any type of fat was bad like greasy food and the fat in crackers and cookies. Meat was also warned against.
Well, years later we had nutritionists
telling us to avoid carbohydrates and be careful about eating sugary fruit. And that some fat is OK. Also eating meat in moderation is OK especially fish and poultry.
Atkins said counting calories is a hard way to diet. So his idea was that you could eat all the meat you want and a certain amount of vegetables and dairy. And all that protein would help you lose weight. I’m not exactly sure why is diet is not popular anymore though I still see Atkins products being sold in stores.
Now I’m trying to lose weight again and I am seeing a nutritionist because my health insurance covers the whole cost. It’s hard to know how to diet with so much conflicting information.
My nutritionists have just told me how to eat in a common sense way. Basically, she tells me, some protein is good every day. it doesn’t have to be meat, it can be eggs or beans, or milk or other sources of protein, she tells me eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit but avoid all the more sugary fruit. She says some low fat or non fat dairy is OK. A little oil is OK to cook with but specifies virgin olive oil is the best oil for you.
Some carbohydrates are OK, for instance, wheat pasta or brown rice or some whole grain bread. And it’s basically everything in moderation.
But me and millions of other people don’t stick to diets because we don’t want to be hungry all day. But the solution to that is healthy snacks. Fruit or yogurt or popcorn or vegatables w/dip. Low fat crackers, cheese sticks.
Well, I wrote way more than I meant to. It’s just stuff I picked up over the years. There isn’t a diet in the world that is going to work for everybody. And there ain’t a diet in the world that is going to be universally liked. You just have to experiment and see what fits your lifestyle (and your budget of course).
I do think 1200 is too low too. And I think I need to focus on getting more protein. Usually when I have cravings it’s for meat. Today I’m craving pasta, but that’s unusual. I’ve been getting my protein from Slimfast, eggs every once in a while, tofu, beans and nuts and I’ve had 3 cheeseburgers to cheat. Oh and I’ve had chicken chili twice. And just today I had salmon which really hit the spot. I’m planning on adding more fish and eggs to make up for the extra 200 calories.
When I went to see a dietician, she said 4-6 punds a month was a healthy rate, and anything more than that would be unhealthy and easily regained
