To delete facebook or not

Facebook tracks and sells your information. I know I keep touting MeWe, but I swear it makes me feel so much safer online… this is from their website:

We have built “privacy by design” into every aspect of our network
You are the owner of your information and content.
We don’t share your personal information with anyone.
You control your permissions, privacy, and who can access your content.
You control what others see in public searches.
You can make yourself invisible to other members
You can download all of your content anytime
We do not use facial recognition technology.
We do not use tracking cookies.

and some more…

What is MeWe?
MeWe is the world’s private communication network. We turn the table on Facebook and other social media companies with a revolutionary service that emphasizes privacy and social sharing where people can be their true, uncensored selves. No spying. No cookies. No data sharing.

the trouble with other social networks besides the mainstream is convincing other friends to adopt it

delete; it is a dopamine driven feedback loop addiction that draws you in.

Break the habit, people before 2006 NO ONE NEEDED OR USED FACEBOOK, it is not a requirement for human life.

Twitter too, myspace, etc

I’ve hacked away at my friends list for the past 2 yrs and have 5-6 friends (mostly family) and am open to adding or reducing that number as I feel comfortable with. Anyone who thinks I’m their captive audience for hate, politics or indoctrination of any sort, I get uncomfortable with. If they don’t respond well to a subtle hint or two, they get unfriended while I play Fundamentum by Lesiem. It’s very empowering.

it depends if you just use at as a tool, or if you are deriving pleasure from ‘likes, notifications, shares’ etc making you feel puffed up or whatever

i personally use a browser extension on facebook so i can modify the interface and remove what i dont want to see. i also only follow a few people. the unfollow button is a great way to reduce all the nonsense posts that people may be putting out. remove the news section and stuff as well.

browser extension is called FB Purity

like honestly if we think about it.

even this forum has almost a very similar design to make it addictive in terms of likes, shares etc…

I think the infinite scroll is tough for people. its just a never ending supply of new information

moderation is key. although it is way easier to just eliminate all sources lol

It makes me feel bad, I end up just looking at the lives of people who are better than me and going into a cycle of self doubt and depression. Even some of my more attractive, normal, married and happy relatives trigger this.

On the rare occasion I went on there I stalked one or two girls from high school. I just glanced at their profiles to see if they were in relationships, but mostly I just clicked away and felt extremely guilty and depressed at how pathetic and lonely I was. Then I got paranoid that they would know and think I’m a creep.

I get paranoid people will make fun of the few likes or comments I make. I get paranoid I said the wrong thing in a chat. I get paranoid people will judge me for looking ugly in my pictures. Facebook triggered paranoia for me long before I had sz.

I used to be more open to social media, I have instagram and unused twitter for example and enjoyed looking at cool pictures to know what was going on with my classmates from high school and my cousins. I was finally starting to be normal, then I had my psychotic break and was on facebook and instagram seeing all these secret messages in the stuff my family and friends posted. That was so traumatic I never had the courage to go back there, to me its like a minefield for negative feelings and associations.

I know its rough, I’m sorry and I know how you feel when you go on facebook. It’s been the same thing for me, depressing seeing people thrive and live successful “normal” lives. I can’t help but compare myself. I used to be more open to social media as well, schizophrenia definitely changed that. It’s total a minefield now, as you say.

But there is a plus side to all this, freeing myself from the worries, stares, and stress of keeping up an image on facebook. Plus time better spent elsewhere. I’d rather be on this forum where it’s anonymous and I can actually talk about my illness instead of being paranoid and trying so hard to hide it or be “normal” on facebook.

Social media is garbage. I can’t stop comparing myself to the extravagant lives some people posts in their account. By doing so, I always feel like I haven’t done anything right with my life and I’ve been missing the best things in life.

Despite all that, I don’t have the guts to delete my social media. That’s where I rely on communication with some of my friends. Well it’s my poison.

You know it’s bad when you can’t actually delete it you can only deactivate it. So yeah in my opinion it’s well worth getting rid of. I can’t delete mine. It’s currently deactivated. Maybe at one point there was an option to delete but not no more unfortunately

Twitter is awesome for the latest news from tech news, political news, world news & sports news. Also it’s a great way to read what certain celebrities or athletes are up to.

4000?!? :open_mouth:

How can you keep track of all of them? You can’t possibly know that many people. What do you need 4000 “friends” for?

The human brain can only keep track of about 150 relationships at once, so I try to limit my facebook friends to something around that number. I used to add people I went to school with or worked with, but then I just ended up with a bunch of fb friends I never talked to and didn’t really care about, so now I only add people if I have a genuine interest in getting to know them.

I can’t follow them all or see all their posts. I rarely log in. I have them as audience for my religious-spiritual lectures.
