It’s a nature based club. Anyway, there’s a potluck event in 2 weeks. I want to go, but am very nervous because I’ve only talked to the people online, and although it in a public store, it’s at night. I’m nervous about going alone (no one else I know wants to go), and about meeting new people, and about being followed. I’m very awkward socially.

I’m also socially awkward, but you join this club because you have interest in it. I would research the area to make sure it’s safe.

It’s okay to be nervous when trying a new thing and meeting new people. Normal even, to the extent such a thing exists. I find that acknowledging the awkwardness goes a long way with new people. Something simple as “this is my first time out in a while and I’m a bit nervous”. Most folks will respond positively to that honesty and want to make you feel welcome. You can do it.

I tried saying just this when I joined a walking club. It was not well received at all. I never went back.
But, I think this crowd could be different possibly. I just need to come up with a different thing to say.
Sometimes with people, it’s not as formulaic as it feels like it should be. Sometimes there isn’t a “right thing” to say. You just gotta say whatever you say to the right person. I wish you luck in this group. Nature people sound like they’d be chill.

I think remembering that you can quit this club and never see them again, just like you did your walking club, if you choose to, might help you to work through some of your social anxiety. Remember, that if it doesnt go well, you can choose to never see them again.

You all make good points. I’m going to try to psyche myself up to go. These are people who love Earth and want to do what they’re able to take care of her, and be in nature as much as possible. I feel the same way so we have something in. Imminent which helps
I’ll have to bring my own food since I’m now on a special diet. As far as the fish I’m bringing to share, I think I’ll bake blueberry muffins.
