The most protein per calorie

I’m always checking the nutrition label on the foods I eat to see how much protein per calorie I’m getting. Something is really high in protein if it has 1 gram of protein for every ten calories. Most foods have way less protein per calorie than that. Skim milk has 1 gram of protein per calorie. Cottage cheese without the fat has more than one gram of protein per 10 calories. Parmesan cheese has a LOT of protein per calorie, but it is expensive as hell. Beef jerky has more than one gram of protein per ten calories, but it probably has a lot of sodium. Parmesan cheese is high in sodium too. Any kind of defatted meat has more than one gram of protein per 10 calories. The same with fish. If fish aren’t packed in oil they have a LOT of protein per calorie. But most of the food we eat has double the amount of calories per one gram of protein than the foods I mentioned. I just drank a couple of “high protein” drinks that had 20 calories for every gram of protein - 240 calories and 12 grams of protein. They were delicious. But the all time champion of having the most protein per calorie is shrimp that isn’t fried or sauteed in butter. Shrimp has almost double the amount of protein per calorie than any other food, and shrimp are delicious, but they’re expensive as hell. Protein helps regulate your blood sugar. It does a lot of good things for your body.

I like protein shakes. Mine are 30g protein and 160 calories. I’ve been drinking them since Geodon makes me borderline anorexic. Now that I’m exercising regularly I’ll need it.

That’s a lot of protein per calorie. Be careful, because too much protein can be hard on your kidneys.

I’ve heard that broccoli has a lot of proteins per calorie, but that’s not really a food you eat a lot of usually.

I drink a 100g protein shake during the day (500 kcal) just to be sure that I hit 1g/lean body mass pound

Vegetable protein generally isn’t as high quality as animal protein. Most plants are lacking in one or two of the amino acids that make up protein, but if you mix different kinds of plant proteins with each other you can get all the amino acids you need. Mixing beans and rice is always good. Mixing beans and corn is good gives you high quality protein. I’ve heard that whole wheat bread and peanut butter give you high quality protein. Also, plant protein generally doesn’t have near the fat that animal protein has. In that way it is much healthier than animal protein.

That’s a LOT of protein. You might want to check with a dietician to see if that’s okay. I’ve heard that too much protein is hard on your kidneys.

Yeah, for the average person who doesnt work out or doesn’t want to build muscle. But the needs for someone who works out regularly are different. I drink plenty of water aswell

That’s good. Body builders and weight lifters need a lot of protein.

I dunno the specs, but they say eggs are the most “complete” food out there.

I think it’s like 70cal per egg or something, and they’re loaded with protein and low carb as well.

I also have heard of too much protein being bad for the kidneys.

As a vegan, I probably won’t run into this problem.

I have in the past gotten bad kidney test results for having too low of a protein diet because I sometimes have difficulty eating meat. I have mental problems. But I am doing good the last few years. Anyway, it doesn’t matter now if I do start getting grossed out because I found a vegan protein shake that I like and I’m using that in place of a couple meals to help keep the calories down and get regular protein.

I never really heard of someone computing the protein per calorie. Is this a common thing?

Yeah . “Clean” protein sources are highly desirable because good aminoacid composition and relatively low carbs/fat content. For example, beef tenderloin vs kebab lamb meat

No. As far as I know I’m the only person doing it, but I bet body builders do that too. They want to look ripped.

Protein is good for you. I eat a high protein low carb diet. But you don’t want to eat as much protein as you want, as excess protein that you don’t burn, stores as fat. So you can gain weight on it. That’s what I’ve been told, anyway.

My former in laws were extremists about eating a high protein, high fat, almost zero carb diet long term. They started eating that way when they were 50. She died of a heart attack at 60. He died of kidney disease at 70. It’s not actually healthy to eat super high protein diets with no carbs. It’s ok to eat high protein, low carb, but it needs to be balanced and not extreme.

Anything taken to the extreme is hazardous to your health. I remember a while back it was trendy to recommend that a person get most of his calories from carb’s. That kind of a diet is good for distance running, but it’s not good for power lifting. The best diet for general maintenance of the body is a balanced diet of carb’s, fat, and protein.

I think I saw a Simpson’s epsiode where they made a super delicious, high calorie chocolate eclair that was posioned! That surely must be the most calorie to least protein cake! :smiley:
