SzA or something else?

Nearly 20 years ago I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I was in an extremely stressful situation, and started hearing voices. After starting anti-psychotics and antidepressants the voices went away and my mood somewhat improved. After a year or so, under a pdoc’s supervision, I tried to go off APs. I had a relapse within a few weeks.

I later asked a pdoc if he thought it might be psychotic depression, and I think (it’s been a few years) he said something about the timing of my symptoms.

In recent weeks I’ve had two separate therapists express doubts about this diagnosis. They’ve said that they think I’m too in touch with reality to be Sz/SzA.

Is there any way to be sure if I have either illness? Could I be better now, 20 years later? Could it have been something else (psychotic depression, “brief psychotic disorder”, etc?)

Therapists I find overstep themselves and think they’re doctors. Truth is your pdoc is the one who decides this.

It’s something that resolves itself with time either way. I’d be more inclined to trust your psydoc. In our medical system they are the ones who provide meds and counselling.
