Hi I’m thinking of getting into writing short stories. Does anyone on here write stories and can can anyone recommend any good books that are an introduction or help you write stories??
Are a few writer clubs that would be part of your local public library. That might be a good place to start. If they don’t have one. Chances are they would most likely know where the nearest one is
I was going to say check out the local library and see what writers books or mags they have… if a branch near you has a writers club or a special event with a writer.
I love the idea of writing… I write all the time… I just don’t edit, polish and share what I write… but it’s something I’ve been thinking of trying.
Good luck… hope you can also meet some like minded and encouraging people.
Thanks @Dreamscape and @SurprisedJ.
I will start by looking in the library and see what writers book or mags they have first.
When i feel more confident i will join a writers club.
You know, I wrote about half of a science fiction book once, but I don’t know if I’ve ever written a truly complete, fictional story of the short story genre.
Still, I enjoyed reading the book ‘Immediate Fiction.’
http://www.amazon.com/Immediate-Fiction-Complete-Writing-Course/dp/0312302762/
It calls itself a ‘complete writing course.’ It isn’t just about things like how to craft a story, it is also about things like how to motivate yourself to take time to write.
There are a lot of books about writing, though. Maybe asking an experienced writer, as was suggested by others, is a better idea.
Thanks @AberrantSalienc
I just looked at your link to the book and it sounds very good with good reviews just the sort of book i would be interested in reading and learning from!
Its good to talk to a fellow writer and i have a friend who also likes writing. He has inspired me to get into writing.
I’m working on my first novel and have read several books on writing to help me through the biggest help for me has been the book:
- How to write a novel using the snowflake Method by Randy Ingermanson. It’s story is a little goofy, he takes characters from children classics such as 3 little pigs, and Goldilocks, but the method is sound. I like that he infused a story while teaching us the method. Then at the end he has the method nicely laid out and shows examples using the characters in his story. It’s a quick read and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting write stories.
- Horror Writing 101 by Steve French was another good read, since my genre is horror/science fiction.
- Holly Lisle’s Create a Plot Clinic, and How to write page-turning scenes have both helped me a lot to.
- And to throw one more–well two actually but they’re similar and by the same author: Outlining your novel and Outlining Your Novel workbook by K.M. Weiland have come in handy for me as well.
I know you said short story, but I think a short story needs all the same premise as a long story does, just lest words and probably less back-story.I have a whole slue of other books I’ve used to work on my writing and over 30 books that offer prompts if you’re interested. Well I don’t have the actual “books” I have the kindle versions. But I can share titles and the authors of them if you’re interested.
