Some goodies from my autism assessment

This was done 3 years before i was diagnosed with sza, i often wonder how much is autism and how much is sza. Ive always been awkward and socially aloof. Except as a teen i tried to copy how others would interact and often made a lot of mistakes.

It sure would be interesting to explore that. Do you plan to get retested by someone familiar with both autism and mental illness?

Only if i need to for services. I am confident i have autism, the only reason i sought diagnosis was because i wasnt sure at first, but ive been researching and pondering since then and feel confident its accurate, plus my last therapist agreed.

I try and forget I have autism

It just annoys me to think about

The reports do go some way to helping self-exploration

Just hope you had some support after the diagnosis, as here in the UK (England at least), there is just nothing unless you’re of school age

Utterly pointless exercise in a psychology context, as the psychologist told me after I did the assessment she asked for that her techniques won’t work

ASD is now a barrier for any further psychology, because they don’t have anyone qualified to deal with it

Unsure to others experiences, but I do not think it was unreasonable to expect some sort of support/treatment post-diagnosis

All I got attached to my report was a list of long defunct services

I enjoy finding community with autistic people. I find NTs too confusing and they dont tend to like me anywau. It was helpful finding i was a normal autistic instead of a broken NT. I was referred to vocational rehab through my diagnosis, and they paid for me to go to college, and they can help me find a new job if i ever need it. It also helped me to get on disability. But yeah therapists here widely dont know how to work with autistic clients. The only two therapists that have helped me were autistic themselves.

I don’t have autism, but I couldn’t agree more.

I am pleased that you had a better experience

Sounds like a lived experience person is what’s needed.

One place I tried was Wrong Planet, but I didn’t like the forum configuration too much

Similar to mine . Mine didn’t have levels as I’m in the UK, but ADOS -2 result was social communication 3(classical autism level) social interaction 5(Asperger’s level). That got me an Asperger’s dx. That was in May 2019. I first saw a pdoc in the autumn of 1973. Was given a schizophrenia dx in 1975.

I only got the dx because I moved to be near my daughter, and came under a more intelligent and open minded pdoc. It also helped that my daughter was with me. I think she was the one to mention autism. At the time she had had over 20 years experience working with those with dementia, learning disability, physical disability, autism, mental illness etc .

There’s been sod all help and support for it . Realistically though even if there was such help, the chances of reversing the damage caused by by over 4 decades of inadequate treatment are smaller than minute. My current CC come depot nurse is caring, friendly, intelligent and polite. Ditto the pdoc. That means a lot, after the crap I’d previously been subjected to. They’re human. They can’t work miracles. I don’t expect them to.

I’m doing as well as can be expected. As I said to the cc/depot nurse when I saw her recently,to which she agreed, once you’re past the acute stage social care needs dominate the picture. The trouble being that the social care system is not fit for purpose. There’s been talk of the need to improve things for quite awhile, but it’s not gone beyond words to actually taking concrete steps to improve things.

That was supposed to be a reply to @Moon
