Should I get a non-Real ID?

I found the information on Arkansas Motor Vehicles website. To get a non-Real ID card for people over 60 who no longer drive that doesn’t expire, you only have to show them a Passport and Birth Certificate. I have both. For a Real ID card that expires every four years, you have to show them a bunch of stuff and the name has to match on everything. It’s easier to get a Passport than it is to go to Motor Vehicles. If my arthritis gets any worse or I have to go to a nursing home, I would like to have the non-expiring ID. Passports expire every ten years. Mine expires in 2030.

What should I do?

  • Get the non-Real non-expiring ID
  • Get the Real expiring ID
  • Just use my Passport
  • Other/Don’t Know

I’d say get whichever one enables you to do more things that you will need to do. If it’s all the same no matter what, get whichever one makes things easier for you.

I didn’t vote because I don’t know what each option would let you do.

Doesn’t hurt to have both in case you lose one. A passport is handy if you misplace a different government ID and vice versa.

As far as I know the Real ID let’s you get in Federal buildings and fly on an airplane, but your Passport is a Real ID. With the non-Real ID I would had to maintain my Passport if I want to fly or enter Federal buildings. That’s all I know about it.

They postponed requiring a Real ID until 2023.

I just recently got my real ID, and for $10 more it will expire in eight years.
