I’m a male, and when I was around my niece and nephews I thought that I really wanted to have children. It didn’t work out. I do think that if sz’s can provide a stable, loving home they should be able to have children.

Wow. What a question there.

I wouldn’t have kids even if i wasn’t a schizophrenic.

In this madness i would never think of having children, not ever.

Weigh it, weigh all of it out and know what your child’s fate is. I couldn’t, i just couldn’t.

I am woman. I had 2 kids before getting my dx. Before getting really ill. I got to keep my kids because I have a husband that is “working properly”. Social services have done several investigations of if my kids can live at home. My autistic son lives at a group home and goes to school there. He is home every second weekend.

I can’t manage my kids on my own. Example, I don’t remember if I have promised them something and my 10-yearold uses that against me. Suddenly I have promised this and that. It’s good to have my husband to back me up on these things.

But when I’m ill, my husband has to do everything at home and meetings in kid’s school. It is a large burden on him. He says he doesn’t know for how long he can cope.

My kids are now 10 and 13. The hardest years are passed. Now they can cook their own food if I mess up and miss doing it and am not home.

I am a bit worried about my 13-yearold. He says he has paranoia. He believes ppl are after him and out to harm or kill him.

I’m with @pansdisease on this one.

I think that society being what it is, the question is moot.

Its a bless and a curse at one.
You don’t have to be sz to mess up your kid.
Life’s gonna take care about it.

I have a niece and nephew too. In my opinion that is the best position to be in because you will have all the benefits of having children around you without all the responsibility.

I find it tough to hold it together on a daily basis… I couldn’t bring a child into the equation based on that. But I can still be a good uncle.

Also bear in mind that if the parent is mentally unwell the child may need to provide the parent with support from time to time, which is not ideal. This is what happened with my mother. It was not always a stable upbringing which maybe led to some of my problems in later life.

I have heard of doctors recommending to patients that they do not have children in case they pass it on, but I remember reading that the risk is raised from 1% to only 6% which is not a huge risk.

The likelihood of a diagnosed person to have a child with the illness is .13, however this increases dramatically with every child. If you have five kids, at least one will be schizophrenic, rest assured.

Lol it’s like we’re vampires! We pass on our condition which is very rare and stigmatized, and people with my cluster of symptoms and other traits (intelligence cough) do often perform well above average. I’m not making this up. (Cernis et al, 2015).

I know a paranoid schizophrenic, sweet lady, and she has a son. Her son is just fine mentally, I think anyway. But my dad seems to think that all schizophrenics should be sterilized. I disagree. I think that they should be able to have children, and if they do end up schizophrenic as well, then they can treat it the same way the parents do.

If I thought I could provide for children, and give them a good chance at life, I don’t see a problem with it.
