After 17 years of piano lessons, I’ve finally come to the realization that I am never going to be able to play. So, I am quitting now. Ultimately, whether it was my illness’ fault or my meds’ fault idk, but what does it matter? All I know is that I am incapable.
Piano and violin are hard. At least you don’t beat yourself up…probablly was good time also and you can play it from time to time as you enjoy it.
Incapable of what?!?
If you enjoy playing, why quit?
You don’t have to be a professional concert pianist to have fun
Don’t be so hard on yourself @SkinnyMe
I hope you will keep playing piano and enjoying it even if you stop having lessons.
That’s sad. Maybe change from trying to be really good at piano to finding music to play at your current level that you really enjoy. Play the piano because it’s fun. Play it because it’s therapeutic. Don’t worry about whether you’re good or not.
Echoing what others have put. Just because the lessons have stopped does not mean you no longer are a pianist. I hope you have a keyboard you can play for fun on without using the teachers.
I said I’ll never paint again…now later, years later, I am feeling the urge to do it again…don’t stop. you were so proud of your playing…so what if yoou make mistakes…it’s YOUR music.
My secret of success is simple: put a short time limit to your practice so you will do it again the next day. I can’t play anything perfectly on guitar but I get a taste of greatness by playing the greats. I feel it is an honor.
I must correct you @jukebox. I haven’t been proud of my playing in 16 years. And thats just it: I don’t make mistakes. Hardly any. I just sound so terrible.

It sounds like you’re a perfectionist to an unhealthy extreme. I’ve been there, especially when it comes to piano. I think you should work with a therapist on this issue. Your perfectionism is hurting you deeply because it’s causing you to not enjoy things you love.
You’re playing classical pieces, right? Have you ever considered learning jazz or any kind of music where you get to improvise? I’ll learn a piece on my classical guitar from time to time and I enjoy the process, but improvising is a totally different thing. Probably the part of playing I enjoy the most. Maybe it’ll light a fire back under you.![]()
I had to realize that I’d ost my ability to learn, concentrate and remember things last week. So I had to stop doing things that required that.
I always thought I was a smart guy but not anymore.
If thats meds, or illnesses I don’t know.
Sorry to hear that. I guess piano and music is about how you space the musical notes, and for that you have to feel it. How can you feel the space if you are numb by meds. I can relate to that…it makes sense. But it is still a nice game you played. It developped both sides of the brain. It is not easy to play piano.
I’d love to play piano. I always wanted to play.
To hard for me, I was more into the drums, but Any instrument would make it
i tried that but i was bad. i thought it’d be easy but its solid
You can explore other other ways to make music. I was thinking it would be good if there was some kind of music therapy where someone teaches a group how to make music in certain software. It’s really important that you can continue to play music, I just know that there are many interesting avenues that you could get comfortable with learn from and enjoy
I think you’re exactly right @Davincii. I can’t feel the space in the music because I’m too numbed out by all my millions of meds.
Right now, I am consoling myself with the knowledge that I will, one fine day, play the piano perfectly and beautifully without ever doing a thing. But, I can’t talk about that here.
I struggled for a very long time to get circular breathing down on the didgeridoo. All those hours sitting in front of the TV until I finally got it.
Music is a journey and not a destination.
