I’m on it. I take 1 mg in the morning and 2 mg at night. The only side effects I have from Cogentin are dry mouth and a little fatigue. This past year I’ve lost 88 pounds, and that’s while taking Cogentin
I was backing out my spot and some girl hit me. It was my fault. I was completely incapacitated by the prolixins akathesia. I think they always gave cogentin with prolixin. It’s needed for the shaking. Safe to say prolixin wasn’t the right med for me tho.
I was prescribed it for pretty much the exact same reason except I couldnt stop stretching and kept cracking the joints in my toes. When I was on it it helped a little bit but not much. I would recommend sticking with it for a bit because I think it helps more over time but at one point I just couldnt bear it and went non compliant on my meds. Did not go well
Everyone is different though, Im hoping your experince is good
I was on it for about almost 35 years. My psychiatrist prescribed it to help with side effects of Prolixen, and then Resperidone.
My current psychiatrist took me off it at my request just last week because it was causing dry mouth. What happened was I didn’t see my dentist for a year and when I finally saw him, he found I needed 5 fillings and gave me two crowns. He said my teeth were great about year ago but he said a dry mouth really hastened decay and that’s why my teeth were in such poor condition… My dentist told me to tell my doctor all this so now I’m off it.
At one point I lost 60 lbs. on Resperidone and Cogentin. After 5 years I gained it back but then lost about 68 lbs.
I took Cogentin to treat the side effects of Haldol. I didn’t feel it. It did help with the side effects, but other than that I could discern no effects.
I took Cogentin daily, for maybe a year, to help with similar issues plus akathisia. I had no weight gain from it. In fact, I don’t remember any side effects from it. I hope you also don’t have any, or at least very few, side effects!! Good luck to you!!
I’m on Cogentin to counteract the side effects of Invega–hand tremors and mouth quivering. It’s not effective for TD, but it doesn’t cause weight gain.
