Problems Swallowing Food Quickly

According to the following document on a government web site, antipsychotic medication can cause trouble with swallowing:

http://www.ct.gov/dds/lib/dds/health/attacha_med_dsyphagia_swallowing_risks.pdf

“Antipsychotic/ Neuroleptic medications given for treatment of psychiatric disorders may affect swallowing as many of them produce dry mouth and some of them can cause movement disorders that impact the muscles of the face and tongue which are involved in swallowing.”

I started having mild trouble swallowing while on antipsychotics 6 years ago, but it has now gotten worse to the point that it may take me 2 to 3 hours to eat a meal that it may only take others 30 minutes or so to eat. I’ve been on antipsychotics for almost all of 9 years now.

I called my psychiatrist and left a message about the problem about 4 days ago, but she hasn’t called me back.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Have any solutions worked?

I had trouble swallowing recently, I quit the med, and I’m able to swallow again. But I’m off meds. Swallowing is important. Be careful not to choke! That was my decision point, risk of choking.

I have a dry mouth, so my Tabasco sauce gets stuck in the back of my throat and burns. It did that this evening at dinner.
