Not as easy as you’d think. There’s all kinds of things to add for their health. My dog went 3 straight days refusing treats, kibble, and various wet dog foods. In desperation, I prepared him real chicken breast with green beans. He loved it and ate it happily.
So I’m feeding him home cooked meals now. I joined some Facebook groups that have links to tons of information. I don’t plan to feed him a raw diet though. I’ll boil or bake his meat.
I’m going to work on a plan for the next week, make it up, and freeze half so it doesn’t go bad halfway through the week,
Anyone else prepare home cooked meals for their dog?
@pretzel , My dog is very small and I can use inexpensive ingredients, and freeze stuff to make it last. I plan to shop as cheaply as possible. My dog simply won’t eat otherwise. And he doesn’t get people food everyday like some dogs so he didn’t get spoiled. I have no idea what happened
glad you were able to get him to eat! poor pupperoni. yea even finding a diet for ourselves is hard and we know exactly what were feeling. Its hard cause its not like theres a doggy nutrition facts. I know you know a lot about it so i dont have much to add except maybe this: add variety.
that way pup will never have any deficiencies even if were unsure exactly what his nutritional requirements are… if there’s variety he’ll get enough of everything on average. beef one day chicken another, beans one day, brocooli another etc.
thats one of the good things about small pups lol they dont eat much… i think thats why my mom spoils her pup haha, he doesnt ever eat dry food…all wet meals and even that she hardly eats. she wants treats and human food all the time
I used to, forever ago. I followed the BARF diet (bones and raw food). We tested CBCs pretty regularly to make sure they were doing alright, and while we didn’t have any issues… never again will I do that!!! Prepping offal and veggies in advance and freezing, having to bleach everything because of raw chicken, etc. NuPro isn’t a cheap add-on, either. Coats and teeth looked great, but it’s a big ol’ no for me.
Good luck @LilyoftheValley
I was thinking about cooking for my petite cat as she is very picky but there’s a lot more to it than just giving her meat and carbs.
Cats need Taurine and other vitamins and minerals.
My cat became super fussy in her last two months. She would like one type of food for 3 days and then refuse to eat it again for a month. I have about 300 cans of different varieties that we kept to cope with that.
