I’m seriously thinking about preparing homemade meals for my dog from now on

My puppy has been on several commercial dog foods with no success.
Lots of soft stools and itchiness

Recently I’m in the process of feeding him a lamb based commercial puppy food and although his stools have been normal he’s still scratching at his body and ears from time to time.

I am seriously considering placing him on a homemade diet or the Farmers Dog.

If I take the homemade diet route I would be consulting with a pet nutritionist for at least a couple of sessions.

The Farmers Dog is another good option I’m seriously looking into.

I’m so fed up with the commercial foods.

I know for a fact that he’s allergic to chicken and salmon.

I used to give my dog some of my food when he was still around I didn’t think anyone or anything that’s living should have only one option so I gave my dog food that he would actually like

Sorry your little pup is having trouble with food.

IMO home cooking is the best route.

farmers dog is a great start before home cooking.

You can try all their recipes. They will replace the ones that disagrees with your dog.

I don’t think that I can feed him the Farmers Dog because they use chicken as an ingredient in all their varieties
He’s allergic to chicken

Do you add essential nutrients to the homemade meals @Kxev?

I’m going to consult with a vet nutritionist

I use omega 3 fish oil supplement
Bone Broth
and Calcium from grounded eggshells: Calcium to Phosphoros ration has to be 1.5:1

A good start would be replacing treats first too.

you can see what they like, apples, bananas, blueberries, greek yoghurt.

I’m just thinking about it
The only issue I have with serving homemade meals to my pup would be that it’s time consuming

I may see how he does on his new kibble first

Giving him different fruits and veggies as treats could be a good start.

Thanks @Kxev

I’ve done it before.

Trick is,

You actually have to get supplements in powder form to add to your prepared food.

My vet told me people just give their dogs bland human food thinking that’s okay,

And it is, for a time.

But long term it’s missing things they need and can cause damage.

Was my vet trying to just sell me on some ■■■■■■■■ product they’re selling?

Possibly.

I’d do some research on it regardless.

Yeah I’ve been doing some more thinking and I don’t think it’s really such a good idea long term

Thanks @Charles_Foster

yes. im just gonna say the the unpopular opinion of kibble being healthy in itself a lie.
its ultra processed packed with supplements to put back what it lacks through the process of making it able to sit on a shelf for 3 years.

the packaging is all balanced and nutritious. doesnt make sense once you actually cook and see your dog actually healthy.

I dont think thats true? I have the ingredients of all their dog foods and I see nothing about chicken in the non chicken recipes.

Personally, on the trying to make it yourself, I might be worried about getting them all the nutrients they need. I’m sure it can be done, but I dont know how easy it would be to get it up to that quality. Besides the real FDA compliant food, they also have a TFD nutrient blend in every recipe.

The biggest problem , IMO, is the cost.

But if you really think you can get it to that quality and have the energy to cook it all the time, thats great.

As listed on their website here is one recipe:

Maggie’s Beef

Beef, Sweet Potato, Lentils, Carrot, Beef liver, Kale, Sunflower Seeds, TFD Nutrient Blend, Salmon oil.

I’m too lazy to type out the others, but I see nothing about chicken.

Well that’s good news @Bowens!
I’ll definitely look into the Farmers Dog then!

Thanks!

Is he allergic to other things beside food? Like cats or something in the home?

No so far certain foods like chicken and salmon

I hope he’s not allergic to Colette!

Never thought about this before

That would be awful!

Could be laundry detergant, pollen, dander. I would look into getting him tested.

Unfortunately allergy tests for dogs aren’t that reliable and puppies shouldn’t be tested, allergy testing should be performed when a dog reaches at least one year old

There’s a monthly shot that can be given. It’s fairly new and I cant remember the name. Typically the trial.period is one shot every month for three months to see if there is improvement. I dont know if puppies can get the shot or not. The shot didnt work for my dog–she constantly licks her paws, not sure if it’s due to allergies or due to a bad habit or boredom.

There’s also a med called apoquel but again, not sure if puppies can get this med.
