So 3 months ago I was told I was prediabetic. I was really surprised because I didn’t eat tons of sugar. But regardless, I went on a high protein VERY low carb diet. I just had my A1C checked, which shows your average blood sugar for the last 3 months. I’m the same number as before! I’ve almost eliminated sugar and carbs from my diet. I’ve lost 27 pounds. The only way I can still be pre- diabetic is if it has nothing to do with my eating and everything to do with my APs. I’m so frustrated about this!
Yeah I’m considered diabetic thanks to the meds.
I am diabetic due to the meds. I never had high blood sugar until i went on them. I watch my diet and take Metformin to manage it.
Risperdal and Abilify gave me higher HbA1c.Clozapine normal.
I switched from Geodon to Haldol 3 months ago. Apparently both cause it in me.
I’m having a blood test on the 28th to check for this. This exactly why I am not staying on the meds. Screw the side effects.
The meds are priority. You are young I assume so you don’t know what relapses can do to your self.Stay on meds, less damage.
I’m gonna wean myself off meds slowly then stop them in march. I will then monitor to see if I can cope without them. If I get paranoid or if the delusion comes back then I’ll get back on the meds at a low dose. I don’t think my schizophrenia is severe. I never hear voices, instead I just become delusional.
but do you see things
I’ve had two psychotic episodes and in each one I hallucinated on day one briefly, but after that it was all delusion. I saw black dots in my first episode, and circles during my 2nd.
I’m also worried about diabetes. I have to do a blood test again. I’m afraid I’ll have to be on a low-carb diet again.
Same thing happened to me. High blood sugar, lost a lot of weight and blood sugar actually went up. It’s caused by abilify.
You need to get on metformin to control it. Metformin has no side effects for me.
But Metformin keeps it under control for you @everhopeful? Can taking Metformin prevent diabetes?
I’m not sure you have diabetes.
For instance if I stopped taking abilify my blood sugar would probably return to normal. That’s not diabetes.
I can’t stop taking it obviously.
So I take metformin and hey presto my blood sugar is normal again. Metformin for me is basically to take care of the side effect of high blood sugar.
Like I said metformin has no side effects for me.
Normally , Metformin is used to treat diabetes
On the bright side, people with diabetes who take metformin live longer than those who don’t have diabetes!
It also has a host of other benefits.

Edit: I’m not a doctor so don’t know if you actually have an actual diabetes problem or not. Blah blah blah.
Wow! Thanks @everhopeful!!!
My girlfriend, who also has schizophrenia, takes Seroquel 400 mg (I take Seroquel 600 mg). She takes Metformin, but she has diabetic neuropathy (takes Gabapentin for that).
Diabetes is serious if not controlled. Neuropathy can result in amputation and worse.
I’m sorry to hear that @anon17132524. So far I’m only pre-diabetic so I’m lucky.
