POLL: Uber/Lyft everywhere or own a car

  • No car payments, gas payments, etc. I’m going with Uber/Lyft
  • In the end owning your own car beats Uber and Lyft. I’m going with owning a car.

I actually can’t decide because I hate hate hate paying for gas and I don’t go a lot of places, because I live walking distance from my church and to groceries.

electric bake or electric scooter might serve you better.

My next vehicle will be the VW ID.Buzz, but I can’t get it until 2024. I’m so done with paying for gas.

I’m going with option 3 for now. Borrow your dad’s van when you need to go somewhere and dont have to pay for insurance. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’ve got one and I’m now doing 90% of my trips around town with it. Not useful for things like taking in recyling or doing a big shop. I now do a lot of smaller grocery runs where I just get a backpack worth of food. We wind up wasting less with the perishables. We still run to the city for non-perishables and frozen goods in bulk. You also can’t use an Escoot for long distances or trips between cities/towns.

I’m going to try and use it a bit this winter, but I’m not hopeful.

I don’t like depending on someone else for transportation. I like being on my timetable and not someone else’s. If I want to go somewhere I don’t want to wait 15 or 20 minutes for someone to get to my house to drive me somewhere. I want to just walk out at my leisure and leave when I want to. I was in Sacramento last week when my sisters drove us up. We called an Uber to take us to a restaurant because there were seven of us and we only had one car. The driver screwed around and got there late and made us 15 minutes late so my stepmom had to sit in the restaurant waiting for us for 15 minutes. That’s why I don’t like depending on someone else for a ride. And buses run late all the time.

I want to control my environment like having control of who I let in my car and listening to what I want and having the car the temperature that I like and having the windows up or down if I want. It sucks having to spend $55 to fill up the gas tank every two weeks but I’m used to it and it’s in my budget. I don’t spend a lot on repairs and can afford to pay $200 every six months for insurance.

When I want it cleaned I take it through the car wash at the gas station for $19 every couple of months for “the works” which includes a wash, a polish and the tires getting cleaned. I took the bus from 1990-1997 and it didn’t kill me and I got pretty good at getting around including going to work and school. But as soon as I could afford it I got a car and I would never want to go back to taking the bus. In case you haven’t noticed, I vote for getting a car.

Anyone have advice on how @ThePickinSkunk, @Montezuma I can borrow @Bowens?
