Poll: Meds vs illness

Do you feel that your cognitive issues and negative symptoms are primarily due to your psych med use, like APs or due to your SZ/SZA/bipolar disorder?

For me I believe that chronic med use have caused me cognitive issues and negative symptoms

What primarily is causing your cognitive issues and negative symptoms?
  • Med use
  • The disorder itself

Although chronic med use have ravaged my brain over the years, I do believe that the disorder itself also causes problems with cognition and motivation

I think that since our meds lower dopamine in our brain which happen to be the pleasure center of the brain it would affect our enjoyment in things.

Yes, dopamine plays a big role with pleasure and motivation

From someone that doesnt take aps on a regular basis, I still have cognitive issue and negative symptom issues. So ill go with ‘its the disorder’

I do think meds can make negatives worse, but they don’t cause them nor will quitting make them go away.

Wow although I am pro meds I can also tell that others are very much pro med also

It depends on which med you are taking and what it does to you too I guess. Going on Latuda and seroquel felt like a vacation compared to zyprexa. Unfortunately I got chestpain from Latuda, and seroquel didn’t help me sleep, so the vacation is over for now.

I was off meds for 2 years and my negative symptoms didn’t get any better, in fact they got worse. Same with my cognitive symptoms.

There’s been a lot of research onthis. The meds just exacerbate what the disease causes.

If only they taught schizophrenics to eat healthy, prescribe low med doses , and advice them to only take meds as needed , and actually made quality medication instead of cheap generics perhaps there would limited or virtually no mental illness.

I was working 12 hr shifts and was basically normal off meds so i say its the meds that cause it

I have tons of energy off meds. On them I kinda just sit around doing nothing. I think Depakote is the culprit. Geodon doesn’t sedate me and Seroquel only sedates me during sleeping hours.

I had issues before I got sick. When I was off meds. So it is more likely due to illness. Motivation or cognitive issues didn’t stay linear on meds either. There were days I felt more fatigued.
