I am considering a career in peer support. many years ago it was suggested I try by someone I saw at the mental health clinic. I think she might have been one too. I’m not sure how good I will be but with training I think I can do it.
I think two guys on my ACT team said I could be a peer support worker. One is now and one was years ago. I don’t think I’d be good at it because I can’t talk a lot.
I do not talk much either, but I think with training I can succeed … maybe … its worth a shot.
I went to an Open Day of a peer support program. Basically you have to get close to people and keep repeating your story to give them hope.
I didn’t want to do that at all.
But my pdoc talked about it. I think they say that to all their patients
Haha it’s worth a shot for me right now. If it doesn’t work out at least I tried.
The peers in the county mental health program I’m in not only talk about how they overcame their issues, they act as a friend, they run support groups like quitting smoking groups, walking groups and art groups, and they have lots of paperwork. They’re also expected to work full time!
I haven’t chosen to do all that because it’s too much for me
All I know is one of the peer support workers saved my life when there was a haldol shortage and I was severely depressed shockingly enough I wasn’t hearing voices however she also had schizoaffective disorder and she was a absolute sweetheart and very uplifting I was at my worst I had been in over a decade It completely gave me hope I could get through the rough patch
I think I would be really good at this job except that with a small selection of ppl I disassociate and so can’t be of much help to them or myself!!
Gluck if u decide to take the job route
I asked and they said they’re willing to consider part time workers so I’m gonna try
That’s awesome @anon25873142 ! Good luck!
