Peer Worker/something similar…

Just wondering if any here worked as this, or looking for work in this field, or have dealt with people in this field?

Edit: I’ve got some interviews so wanted to pick your brains about how to achieve success in this field, some of you guys may have had dealings here… I came close once but didn’t ask for help (wrong decision at my part). But now trying to help people who don’t want help!! Possibly!

Anyone? I thought helping people with the same condition as me or similar would be a good career route since my previous profession was a bit unsteady!

No I don’t want to do it because to be a mental health peer supporter you gotta be pretty stable in order to be an inspiration and guide to a mentally unwell person. It’s a lot of pressure. But hey, I do think about it…

Oh yea plus I’m not that interesting and sociable…

Do you think I should try it??

Hey @Zoe thanks for getting back to me… I think it’s good to help people that have had similar stories as I rather than working with normal people (which was difficult for me).

If you have a chat with your psych maybe they could tell you better… I had a chat with mine and as a dignity of risk I think they said I could do it. I’m hoping that is the case. Up to you to try!

I hope you find one role!! That would be fulfilling. Yes.

Yeah I thought given my past using drugs, plus sz… it’s hard to hide it from people, I came cacross people on the internet with similar situations (published articles) that accept ppl I’m a mental health situation that did peer work, so thought why not you know!

Yes that’s the right attitude, it’s good for you too, to be able to tell your story.

And yea that’s where I have slight issues, I don’t like telling ppl everything about my psychosis so I’d have to prepare beforehand what I’d say.

Plus having a routine is better for your mh. When I was working I would always more than certainly focus on the negatives of the situation , this time around I am prepared for it, hopefully it works out! You’re currently working right?

Yes I hope it works out for you too.

I’m. Not working at the moment. Will apply for jobs end of September.

I’m currently in the recruitment process of a volunteer role.

Now dat I think about it, maybe I could apply as peer support worker. Idk!! Or preferably later.

But initially I was thinking fast food or restaurant type thing.

Hmm fair enough… thanks firstly bit I wanna try mh work, and see for myself if that is better, I had a family friend who had sz and she worked her life at a hospital and it worked out for her… my pdoc says I’m high functioning so I will try mh work where I’m hoping everything falls in to fruition!

I think you would do an amazing job.

You seem kind and down to earth and you are high functioning. It’s maybe perfect for you.

Just show em who you are and express your desire for the role and prepare for the interviews and you’ll maybe ace it

Keyword “maybe” @Zoe I think learning this illness is a life time skill, it’s like starting all over again, but staying in the moment… I hope you try in life and I hope I can find something in life that I can thrive in…

You’re looking for work then?

Yes I say maybe cos I don’t want to put pressure on you.

I’m not looking for work atm, just soon will start volunteering

I will start the job applications process, end of September after my group therapy finishes with the national health system here.

I’m always tempted into this field, but then I ground myself and am like, no!!

OK well good luck to you we are all different obviously so it may be for ya

Thanks, I got the idea because people always work in a field related to their life. Some homeless/drug addicted/people with mh concerns all work in a way to advocate for them, hence me trying for it!
