As someone here informed me, emotional support cats don’t have the same exemptions that service animals do and I’m very upset that that is the case. I think there is no such thing as a service cat, either, so I’m stuck here at my apartments with a cat. I will still get a doctor’s note and see what happens, but man, I am not looking forward to those pet payments and I think my landlord will be upset just because during the initial interview they were very pleased that I did not have a pet and had no plans to get one.
So, now my pet will not be accommodated by my landlord. Yet, aside from its random ankle and leg and arm attacks, kitten is harmless and services my anxiety and mood swings in a beneficial way.
Also, it keeps me calm during the day by snuggling with me at night and purring. Also, he’s cute.
He’s healthy and spry. As some might remember, he was sick with a flu or something and also ear mites, etc. The vet visit was 50 bucks cheaper thanks to a free first visit yipee
Getting his shots Wednesdays. Getting neutered soon after.
I wish there was a law to amend the service animal exemption laws to include cats.
There’s not though, or at least that is what comes up through google, that service cats only qualify as emotional support animals.
I think I’m a service animal for my cat, if we’re being honest.
All jokes aside, I know someone with a severe cat allergy and people taking cats everywhere in public places would be very hard on him. I do think the service animal thing is getting out of hand and that people need to be considerate of allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
I’m going to write to my pdoc today about my cat. I am going to type out a letter saying how I found it (craisglist), how I nurtured it back to health and took it to the vet, and how I am dependent on it for my mental well being, especially regarding my anxiety and fear.
I will say that the animal has given me hope and companionship and that I need him for peace of mind. He also gives me something to live for in the event that I lose my apartment, my mom dies, and I lose my job (these thoughts of loss plague me!).
Wish me luck! Going to drop off the note today and we’ll see if I can convince my pdoc and the landlord to accommodate my cat here in my one bedroom. And I promise not to bring cat with me into wal mart hahaha (even though I feel fear in wal mart cuz of the crowds)
I’ve been owned by cats and by several cats in my 33 year temp position on earth. I love them darling fur baby’s. Hopefully in time something may change but I love hearing stories of folks loving their furry family members.
Hmmm, I kind of want to say that doesn’t apply, but now that you mention it, what exactly does a potbelly pig provide? I actually heard they are pretty smart. Pigs have a high intelligence. Therefore, I would agree that a potbelly pig might be a service animal.
Despite that, the law says “reasonable” accommodations, so maybe building a little pigsty in your apartment would make it "unreasonable?"
You have raised a good point, sir!
My apartment doesn’t allow pets and I managed to clear my rats as companion animals…my childhood best friend has a companion animal cat that lives with her that is not technically a pet…maybe you could work out something like that?
As for clearance to take them everywhere with you though, even into restaurants and stores and whatnot you’re unlikely to get that. But you could definitely get companion animal status so they’re allowed to live with you…
