My best friend has liver damage

And it’s from obesity. But she refuses to cut down on calories. I wish I could understand why she won’t make basic changes that can keep her alive for a long time. She weighs close to 400 pounds (181 kg). I just wish she’d snap out of it and start taking care of herself

This is sad.
It took a fatty liver diagnosis for me to make major lifestyle changes.

First I came off Depakote which was harming my liver, then I hired this medical doctor who specializes in nutrition and she placed me on a specialized low carb anti inflammatory diet.

So far I’ve lost 8 pounds and she feels that I can lose some more weight.

Maybe your friend has given up.

I certainly hope this is not the case.

she needs help…400 pounds is far too big…she will die if she doesn’t change…you know that , I know that…but she probably can’t help herself…

I’m so glad to hear you’re reversing your fatty liver. I hope you succeed

@jukebox That’s the problem. She’s not willing to change. Several years ago she went with me to the grocery store. When I didn’t put any sweets in the basket she asked “don’t you need sweets”? When I said no, she kept pressing me to get some thinking it was an essential part of a diet. It was sad.

Another time, she was in cvs with me and we went by a candy isle. She suddenly started grabbing tons of large bags of candy bars and throwing them in the cart. She just couldn’t help herself. It was heartbreaking to watch.

I have a friend who is the same.
She lives quite far from me, I haven’t seen her in a while
She says things like “the doctors don’t know what’s wrong with me”
It’s tragic because she will lose her life without doubt if she doesn’t turn every bad habit round

Sounds like she has a sweet based neurosis. I think therapy could help that.

She isn’t honest in therapy so it didn’t help her when she did it. She keeps claiming she only eats 1400 calories per day. But she eats dessert after every meal, she eats the highest calorie meals from restaurants and fast food several times a week

@LilyoftheValley , then she might want to die. That’s something she might not be able to talk about.

That’s what I’ve wondered @PinCushion . she has bipolar and borderline personality disorder so it’s very possible

Do you think she might be a food addict?

I do. She has absolutely no control and eats constantly. She gets anxious and angry without high fat high calorie foods

Maybe it can be useful to try and change the way she looks at food if possible. For instance I regard a pizza as snack, so if I’m having pizza for dinner or whatever I just say to myself, the pizza is my snack today, I don’t need any more. The same goes for pasta, hamburgers or whatever.

Half the battle is really to pay attention to what you buy at the supermarket. If you decide to not buy snacks, but only stack up on more healthy options and use good tasting foods as snacks instead that is a really good start. It’s kind of like cutting the tip of the iceberg so you get rid of the worst eating habits which is all the sugars and fat from potaochips and the likes.
If you are able to talk to her about food and diet, maybe you can propose this in some way.

I hope your friend wakes up @LilyoftheValley. It is scary to have a friend who won’t help themselves. I do think she is a food addict. Is there a 12 steps group nearby for her?

She wouldn’t go but yes. I still have to convince her she needs help, but I don’t want to make her mad at me. We talk about it sometimes but she says she’s never going to change. It really is sad.

Then there is nothing you can do. Just be a good friend to her. Good luck.
