My 18 year old son just found out

He just got his first paycheck and he is making $20.25/hr! Yikes!! They really are impressed by him but he didn’t think it would be that much. Hurrah for my kiddo

Very cool. Hope he continues to do well. I’d even think of going back for $20 an hour.

That’s good for an 18 year old. I didn’t make that much as an aircraft mechanic.

What does he do?

He works in a poultry plant. He is in shipping.

He will of course pay his phone bill to me but is it bad if I ask for an extra $125 (so $200 altogether) to help cover some expenses?

It sounds like your son is kicking ass and taking names!

But that’s a great wage to earn for a young age.

I’m happy for you and your tribe.

Yes, definitely fair to ask for help to pay room and board. When I lived with my parents, my SSI was cut considerably.

I’m a freelance translator and I earn only 10 dollars per hour! Good for him! You must be so proud of him.

My parents charged me 80 and I upped it myself to 100 when I got a better job.

The agreement was that I save for a deposit on somewhere to live.

I am so grateful they supported me as now I have a flat that is mine, and the payments are way cheaper than rent would be to live where I am

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for some help covering the expenses.
As long as you leave enough in his paycheck left for him to feel like he can treat himself to something or use it for something.

I think it’s fine to ask him to pitch in a little.

Good for him for taking a job right now. One of the biggest problems with the re-launch here is that many young people are enjoying the CERB too much and not willing to work when they can sit around pocketing the free cash. My daughter sent a resume to a local camp ground and was hired about twenty minutes after they opened their email and phoned her. They haven’t been able to fill all of their positions yet so she’s getting some overtime right now.

I think it would be rude to charge him more because you found out he was earning more. It is like punishing him for succeeding. If you wanted to say, since he is now 18 he has to pay rent, that would be fair. But keep in mind the more you charge him, the longer it will be until he saves up enough for his own place. In the long run, it seems cheaper to let him keep the money and look towards moving out and being fully independent.
