Anyone here hunt morel mushrooms? I’m getting excited for the season and am planning to look in burns this year! I know certain areas (like in the South) are already getting some. Eastern Washington gets them around mid-May
no thanks…I don’t like their texture…they have them around here and a lot of my friends get them…I just don’t care for them, sorry…
I love morel mushrooms! My Grandparents use to live on a farm and we would hunt for them and bring home bags of them they owned many acres and we would go through the trees collecting them and then my Grandma would fry them
They’re easier to find after a rainfall and near rotting down trees. At least that’s what my dad said. We call them Molly Moochers here. They don’t taste like much but if you’re hungry they fill the belly.
Have you ever had them fried? @Loke theyre delicious
Oh yeah they are good that way. With flour salt pepper!
Do you think morels will be out already? Its suppose to rain on wednesday so i was thinking of hunting on thursday but its been a bit cold still
I haven’t found any in years. I was a kid and found some, my grandma grabbed them and fried them up. I didn’t taste them, wish i had.
When I was a kid I think it was like right before the warm weather came in. There were tons of morels. Like bags full. Last year I think we found like 5 or 6. Poke weed doesn’t grow like it used to either.
These are what Morel mushrooms look like
I suffer from Trypophobia so these mushrooms look disgusting to me!
Are pigs used in the hunt
Check this soil temperature map. When it’s light orange it’s hit 50 degrees. After it’s been there for a week and two days after it’s rained you’ll find them growing
Other tips:
-search near creeks with sandy bottoms
-search near water sources like rivers, creeks, and streams
-search near ashes, elms, or cottonwood trees and ones that just died
-look up indicator species which when seen will guide you to morels
Nice to get out in the woods, nice to have a reason. I would be worried about mushrooms, I have heard that there are a lot of mushrooms and some are not good for you. I have never seen them picked and never eaten them so I wouldn’t know.
Morels look very different from any other mushroom
Yeah, I’m probably overly cautious.
Mushrooms are different than plants. Woth mushrooms even the deadliest can have a taste and spit test. Because no ingestion of the mushroom means no poisonong. You also won’t absorb toxins through the skin from handling them.
Some are very easy to identify and are considered idiot proof. Morels and chicken of the woods are two of those. Very distinctove features.
I’m mad because a couple years ago a chicken of the woods grew on the stump in front of my house. They usually come bacy every year, but it didn’t. So i dodnt get to eat any.
Never heard of chicken of the woods i will have to look that up
Interestingly there’s a chicken of the woods Western US variety which is not really edible. The Eastern US and European one is though
