I read a mushroom foraging book once and I believe there is a simple way to test the spores on some sort of paper that will give an indicator if it is poisonous. Sorta like taking a picture or x-ray of the intended mushroom. Wish I could describe it better.
It looks like the western variety is edible when young. Yes pickinskunk it’s called a spore print. Simply take off the cap and then drop it on white paper. Look up your mushroom to see if what color it’s supposed to be

The spore print alone doesn’t tell you if it is toxic for every shroom. It’s a combination of the color, shape, scent, etc. But it’s always a good idea to take a spore print.
