My husband is having some sort of new hobby, mid life crisis.
It’s gotten very outdoorsy.
We’re looking for morels and this “chicken of the woods” kind of mushroom.
He says were having what we find for dinner.
Oy vey.
Wish me luck.

Uh oh. Don’t eat anything poisonous
We’re friends with a botanist that lives down the street.
I think I’m going to run everything by her before we eat it.
Do you or your husband have prior knowledge/experience with the different wild mushrooms that are out there?
If not then I wouldn’t go mushroom picking just yet.
There are quite a few poisonous mushrooms out there. @Charles_Foster
Edit: oh ok that’s a great idea.
Forget about my previous post
Morels are really tasty if you cook them right. Deep fried dipped in seasoned batter is good. Here in West Virginia we call them “Molly Moochers”.
I’ve never tried chicken of the woods
It’s cool you guys are doing something new.
You will love Morels theyre so tasty and filling
Never had chicken of the woods i wonder if it tastes like chicken lol
Morels are a spring mushroom. Chicken of the woods is spring and late summer/fall, so you’re likely to find those.
There’s some deadly ones, mycophobia doesn’t need to be spread.
You cannot get poisoned from handling mushrooms, tasting and spitting is safe even with toxic ones. It’s ingestion that kills.
Chicken of the woods have no toxic lookalikes.
New hobbys are good. Sounds like he just wants to do nature stuff.
Good idea. Poisonous mushrooms often look like morels.
No. There’s no lookalikes that are toxic. You may be thinking of false mores, but those are like lumpy brains. Morels are honeycomb.
Guys really, mycophobia just scares people from learning about mushrooms they can forage easily. There are some very easy to identify ones out there that even beginners can forage.
Oh, ok. I stand corrected. I’ve always been told that about morels. I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know
No problem. I’m really into mushrooms and plants. I hate to see people scared and misinformed.
I hope you had fun with your husband hiking and picking mushrooms. That sounds really nice. I love going to the woods and breathing the fresh, oxygenated air and having a walk around, it’s soothing.
Thank you everyone!
We’re back.
It was soooo hot where we were hiking.
We found some chicken of the woods, but it’s completely dry.
Not eating it until we find a good batch.
Despite being hot, it was fun and I very much enjoyed the time with my husband.
Good to hear! I love mushrooms but don’t believe I’ve ever had wild ones. Just store bought stuff.
Here in Washington, there’s a chicken of the woods that grows on conifers and is toxic
