This Memorial Day weekend think of some of those who have gone before us like my friend here. She was a brave soul
I’m sorry for your loss TomCat. Most of my youth was spent in a small town in northern California. There I made a lot of friends. One had a brother who served in Afghanistan. I remember when news came that he was killed in action, the whole community mourned for him. My friend was never quite the same.
I have dual citizenship in Mexico and U.S. and I have to say I am thankful for those who serve or have served in the military. This nation is worth defending. Sure people have their differences but it is the greatest place to live. I always feel the need to thank people for their service. I’ve heard from some that it gets tiresome to hear it, but I think on a special day like this one it is worth mentioning. A big thanks to all those who serve or have served. They put their life on the line to keep this country safe.
I have a few friends who served in various branches of the military. One of my good friends served in the United States Marine Corps. When he was stationed in 29 Palms I’d go pick him up on the weekends and then we’d go over to Tijuana and get wasted in bars and clubs. Sometimes he’d bring along some buddies. I remember one in particular said he’d never had a beer at a bar. So he had his first beer at a bar with me. Naturally, they ended up being several beers. I paid for them but at the end of the night he offered to pay for tacos. I said no, but he insisted. Needless to say we had a great time dragging my friend across the border, ■■■■ faced drunk.
It was during a time when active duty members of the military were not allowed to cross into Mexico. Anyway we had a great time. I later heard a few of them saw combat. I hope they are well. Just thought I’d share a nice story about some good people I’ve met. They are some good memories I have to this day.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I’m sorry for your loss @TomCat.
Made me tear up.
Yes, that’s a nice story. I work in an Army Reserve office building as a janitor. Some of the soldiers have seen combat but not all of them. Two things that almost every one of the soldiers, both women and men have in common is that they are very respectful, especially the younger ones and the majority of them have a good sense of humor.
They jump out of planes or ride shotgun for convoys of supplies or participate in tank battles but they come back and still have it in them to take the time to thank the janitor and ask me how I’m doing. Being a soldier doesn’t make you a saint, there are bad soldiers and good soldiers, but I couldn’t ask for better treatment and lots and lots of these men and women are genuinely, good people. They are why I like going to work.
That is one cool person. She must have been a great person to know. RIP.
