Lots of trouble

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let y’all know what I’ve been dealing with. First, I lost my medical assistance insurance. Too many resources. Second, I learned that I can’t ever qualify for SSI or SSDI. Too many resources, not enough work history. Third, trying to navigate the healthcare.gov site just frustrates and confuses me, and after getting through the whole application process, something got screwed up with the identity verification and when I went back to the application, it had reset, all my work lost.

So the gist of it all is that I’m paying for my meds out of pocket now. The sertraline, not a big deal, it’s like $8 for a month. The abilify, not so much. $1000 for a month. So I’m going off my antipsychotic. Not because I think I’m okay, but because I can’t get insurance in time to stay on it. Wish me luck, last time I was off APs I was pretty bad, but my mood is much better now and I might be in a better mental place to withstand the symptoms. I’ll keep everyone informed as to my progress when I can.

Couldn’t you just ask a psychiatrist for a cheaper antipsychotic? I did that once, and it worked out great.

Did you ask your pdoc for sample’s? Mine is very accommodating when my insurance isn’t cooperating.

my pdoc doesn’t have samples, and I can’t see him soon enough to get a new prescription for something cheaper. Besides, what antipsychotic is there that’ll be cheap enough for me to afford? I thought they were all expensive. I’m already spending $30 on spironolactone, I can’t afford another one like that. Also, even just seeing my pdoc for prescriptions is $100, I can’t afford that either.

I always hope the best for you… please don’t throw in the towel just yet…

I get my 1 mg of Haldol daily at about $2 to $4 per month, I believe.

I go to my county mental health clinic. They have a sliding scale fee, you pay what you can afford. Maybe your county has something similar.

I get my (rather expensive) meds at my governmental psych hospital outpatients unit for free. Does your country have something like that perhaps?

I think Geodon has gone generic, so it should be much cheaper than Abilify. I think Seroquel has probably gone generic too. Those drugs keep me stable. Maybe you could try those drugs. I imagine all the typical med’s went generic a long time ago, if you can tolerate them.

Please don’t lose hope. Isn’t it possible to try again. Your health is important than all. Anyone in your family who could support you or any organisation who could help you with this…Isn’t there a way to get the medicines cheaper at some government hospital or store in your state?

Again, please please don’t compromise on your health. Avoiding medicines when needed only puts your months back on your progress.

You are not in trouble @RowanAmethyst - Lots of the atypicals have gone generic - like olanzapine, quetiapine , risperidone, clozapine - The typical (old school antipsychotics are dirt cheap - like Haldol - you can always go low dose.
I wish you luck with it, but if you really feel like you need an antipsychotic, there are inexpensive alternatives.

What about medicare or medicaid?

Thats horrible.

This system is crazy and doesn’t work in the least.

Who the ■■■■ is in charge here?!

Sorry to hear you are falling through the cracks in this health care system, sheesh, why penalize you for having resources, if the resources don’t get you what you need? (meds)
Hope you can get theough this in one piece.
I used to take Abilify until I couldn’t afford it (and this was when I had med insurance), but found 5 mgs of haldol did just as well.
What I wouldn’t do to have meds again, sucks when you actually want to take meds, but can’t.
