Larry Holmes

He’s not in the news that often anymore but he was the heavyweight boxing champ in the 1980’s. I think he defended his title 20 times which is respectable.

But ever since he retired in 1989 he’s always complaining he never got the respect he deserved. Anytime you saw him interviewed he would complain about it. And his complaint always bugged me. He got recognition, fame and money but he always has to gripe about not getting respect.

What makes me not respect him even more is when he puts down other boxers. He says George Foreman and Mike Tyson were overrated. He said if Mike Tyson was boxing during Holmes time he would have been beat by any of the greats of that time easily. I disagree with that. Tyson in his prime was a monster. Even Ali says Mike Tyson would have beaten him.

Holmes also famously said, “Rocky Marciano couldn’t carry his jockstrap”’meaning Marciano was no good compared to him despite being the only heavyweight to retire undefeated. Holmes is a disrespectful complainer but he was a great boxer. Just saw him in the news recently disrespecting Foreman.

It is a fact that those who live in competition can never know inner peace.

To live in constant comparison will put any person on the ropes.
