Lack of hygiene becomes a nuisance at some point

Took the bus today and the guy sitting in the seat in front of me reeked. Smelled like not showering for many months. I almost gagged. Some other guy up and left his seat because the smell was so strong. Now I’m imagening smelling it still even though this happened half a day ago.

He was in his 50’s or something. I can’t understand how he could put up with it himself. Perhaps he lacks the ability to smell.

How is he going to change that if you accept a subordinate role and bend yourself to his wishes.

I’m not sure what you mean. This guy didn’t have a agenda. It was just a stranger on the bus.

If he hasn’t learned at age 50 there is nothing I can say that will make him change, even if it was my business to say something.

Knew a fellow alcoholic like that when i was sofa surfing homeless. Place stunk - and yet his bathroom was pristine cos he never used it - his bike was in the bath. Complained one day the barbers wouldnt cut his hair - it was full of dead skin

Last time i heard - he had half his foot cut off from a fungal infection.

Nevermind. I thought you left the bus because of him.
Still, you seem full of prejudice.

It’s incredible some people let themselves go like that.

Guess it has to be some kind of mental problem. No one in their right mind would let it come to that.

How the hell is that prejudice?

Poor hygiene can be really disgusting.

Yeah - he was diabetic too - hence the feet problems. He was a nasty bloody man anyway. Absolute raging alcoholic - couple of bottles of whisky a day. Way far up the spectrum than i ever was.

I guess we are sitting pretty with a home for each person.
Dirt and sweat can accumulate quickly when living outside in hot weather.
Living outside you also don’t have easy access to showers. Saying it was months since his last shower is a stretch. Saying he wont change and can’t change and wont feel shame if alluded to his smell is prejudice.

When my Mom was younger she was at the Pharmacy and this smelly customer walked beside her. When he wasn’t looking, she put a stick of deodorant into his shopping cart. lol!

I wonder what he thought when he got to the cash.

Here in America there are shelters and other places where the homeless can take showers.

I’ve been homeless before but I still cleaned myself when I could. I rent a Section 8 apt now.

So you disagree?

People have had a comment about me before - about it killing all the “good” bacteria. But i always bath with a good dose of Dettol Disenfenctant thrown in. Doctors actually recommend it if you got bad personal hygeine.

Yeah it will sting your bollox - but at least you know your clean.

Negatives make it so hygiene has become a nuisance to me. I don’t leave much tho.

I just don’t see how you draw a parallel between classism and being grossed out my people who smell like crap.

Classism is the direct act of denying those in the classes below you their rights and privileges.

In this case Mr. Hope hopped on a bus and noticed someone stinking like crap.

Mr. Hope didn’t say anything to the man, or force him off the bus.

Whenever someone around me comments on a foul smell, I say, “That’s just my dollar store cologne.”

It usually garners a good laugh.
