So I started seeing some scary ■■■■ when I was lying in bed and I decided that I needed some meds to help me through it. Since I’m on a baby dose (1.5mg) of Invega and a baby dose (5mg) of Abilify, neither of those are helping, I decided to turn to my old friend HALDOL that I used to take. I took 10mg plus 50mg of Benadryl to prevent dystonia.
Was that ok? I didn’t really know what else to do…
That’s why your doc is supposed to make sure you dispose of leftover meds.
Mixing different classes of antipsychotics can be dangerous and at times counterproductive…talk with your doc if your meds aren’t working don’t try to be your own pharmacist.
Um there is stuff like drug to drug interactions so taking non-prescription medication could be very dangerous. Also if there are the same type of drug so there could be like a synergistic type effect. I guess it is too late, but don’t AP’s take a while to take effect anyway? See your pdoc when able to and tell him that you need either a higher dose or that you need a med change if they aren’t working. Anyway that is my two cents I hope everything is alright.
I’m not allergic to anything. Anyone can get dystonia from any AP at any time. It’s a known, common side effect. Never happened to me yet but it still could.
I definitely wouldn’t want to make that a habit. It can be a mistake to become alarmed about sensations you’re experiencing and suddenly altering your med regimen to fight those alarming sensations. It probably won’t hurt you this time, but it’s kind of like not paying attention to a tornado warning. You are probably right if you say altering your med’s won’t hurt you, but if you are wrong that one time …
Incorrect. A dystonic reaction is an allergic reaction to an AP. If you get it, you must never take that AP ever again. You will get no benefit. Take it from someone who has had a dystonic reaction. It is one of the worst things you can ever experience in life.
You, friend, are making stuff up.
You don’t take Benadryl to “prevent Dystonia.” You either are or are not allergic to a particular AP. So if you say you are not allergic to “anything,” you have no need for Benadryl.
Then why did my psychiatrist tell me to take Benadryl with my Haldol? That’s what she told me to do, several months ago, and she said it would reduce the chance of dystonia. Also doctors in hospitals, if they ever give you a Haldol injection in the ER, they give you 10mg of Haldol and 100mg of Benadryl, because of the dystonia. Benadryl treats dystonia just like Cogentin.
That link shows the interactions between haldol and abilify. Basically, it probably won’t immediately kill you, but it’s a very bad idea. Go to the hospital like @moonbeam said and tell them your doctor went on vacation, leaving you on a subtherapeutic dose of abilify and no backup plan. You need professional attention and you can’t wait until your doctor comes back.
Meh it’s only a minor interaction, my boss (well, ex boss but hey she’s a pharmacist!) said it was fine. In fact she said any OTC meds will be fine with Abilify.
I’m about to ask my pdoc to put me on a 3rd antipsychotic. The only reason you would worry about something like that is side effects. More antipsychotics means more sfx.
