John Hinckley Jr

I really don’t believe it took 35 years for him to be considered not a danger to himself or others. I think he was temporarily insane and if Nancy Regan was still alive he would still be in the hospital. Anyone have an opinion?

My opinion is he should not have been shooting at people with a gun. Did James Brady get to go back to being his ‘Normal’ after all those years-- no.
So if he had to live with what hinkley did to him for the rest of his life, hinkley should never have the freedom outside the hospital walls for the rest of his life.
How can you have justice when you destroy someone’s way of life, but then be considered “not dangerous” anymore, and be set free to enjoy everything the person you hurt could not anymore?

I see were your coming from ,but revenge is not the purpose of the justice system. To get revenge on a person that had no control over there actions in my opinion is not right. Most murderers don’t get 35 years most attempted murderers probably won’t see 5 years. If he wasn’t insane he would have gotten less time. If he had any control over what he did ,he shouldn’t have been found temporarily insanity.

All the more reason he should never get out.
And it’s not revenge, it’s about someone taking the quality of anothers life through the action they had complete control over, and if they could not control themselves, they should have no ‘right’ to have another chance to do it again.

You don’t think temporarily insane is a real thing. But the law says it is ,we have to follow the law or change the law . If it was not an option I would agree with you. Maybe it shouldn’t be an option but as of now it is. My point is if he was insane but able to stay overnight at his parents for weeks, something is not right. He was there for 35 years because of who he affected . Not temporary insanity.

The guy that murdered my brother got life without the possibility of parole. I think that should be the standard sentence for murder.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I think that’s pretty rare that they stay if for life, but I hope he does.

I know the law, but that’s not what you asked for.
You asked for opinions, and that’s what I gave you, and don’t try to tell me what I think, because you’re way out in left field.
Try not to be so antagonistic.

Thank you. And the sentence handed down was “without the possibility of parole,” So I don’t think he’ll ever be getting out. At least he better not, or I’ll be forced to track him down myself, and I don’t want to have to do that.

Sorry didn’t mean to be.

My brother was shot with a shotgun by a guy trying to kidnap and rape a woman who was running for her life. This guy had just raped and beaten another woman in a town 3 hours away, drove to our town looking for another victim.
He got 7 years, but was out in 4, on good behavior… go figure.

Sorry to hear that. To me that is far worse than a delusional person that is judged to be insane. But the way I see it is I keep my life clean and they can make the laws a tough as they want. Hope that guy wasn’t found mentally unstable.

Obviously judging by his behavior, how could you say he wasn’t?
Matters not, they felt sorry for him, so they let the dick out…and he did it again, this time he strangled a lady and she died.
aw, bet they’ll feel he should be okay in a few more years and think he ‘deserves’ to be free because he’s sorry now.

For me, the biggest question is whether or not Hinckley is still a danger to society. Maybe they could put an ankle bracelet on him to monitor his movements. He has spent 35 years in confinement, but he wasn’t in prison. He was in a psych unit. There’s a huge difference.

No I don’t think he was necessarily delusional and we are still responsible for our actions. Personally I think he’s evil and deserves life in prison. Hinckley seemed to have a more bizarre delusion and although it was obviously wrong. You can’t compare the malic between the two we are talking about.

I don’t mind seeing people get time off their sentences for good behavior, but in this case it’s ridiculous not to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life. Guys with this kind of violence in their backgrounds should not be paroled.
