My blood sugar when I wake up probably averages 150 or so but in between meals(in the afternoon/evening) it’s usually in the low to mid 200’s. I’m wondering if maybe my Metformin and Glipizide combo is not enough for me. Maybe I need insulin.
Edit: I know this is really a question for a doctor but he is just having me chart it for now so I thought maybe some diabetics could weigh in in the meantime.
I would have your A1C evaluated by an endocrinologist. That’s pretty high for being on those meds. Can get a more accurate reading for the past few months.
Nurse llama thinks you should look into it. I don’t like you being so high.
Depends on my willpower that day. lol. My family brings out the sweets some days and I don’t always resist. For example, I did have one pepsi today. I usually only have one like once every few weeks though.
Ok, thanks for the advice @Ooorgle . My doc did up my Glipizide last time I was in because A1C was high but it did not seem to make much of an impact. I dunno if maybe I need a med change to something stronger.
My A1C was between 145 and 160 for a long time (years). I was on metformin, januvia and forxiga, I then started taking insulin but became resistant to it after a few months.
Only after lowering my AP dose and switching to a new AP did I lose a lot of weight and now my average A1C is 115 (prediabetic levels). I am on metformin and forxiga now.
I think you mean your blood sugar readings and not your A1C…A1C measures long term blood sugar levels and is usually in numbers like 6.5 or 7.3 or something like that.
Yes. I have considered that my abilify could be contributing to my high blood sugar readings. I’m not sure how much of an impact it makes but I know higher blood sugar is one of the side effects.
edit
Sorry, I misread what you said about your AP contributing to the issue.
As far as losing weight goes, I don’t know how much of an impact my Ap has on my weight. I don’t think it’s as bad as Invega was. I am trying to lose weight.
Well I was sticking to the same units for the sake of the conversation, but yeah, my A1C was between 8 and 9. I think it is stupid to measure blood sugar levels with one unit and A1C with another unit. When it is all just measuring your blood sugar levels. A1C is like an “average” blood sugar level over a 3 month period.
Wow, between 8 and 9 is incredibly high. My three readings so far have been one 6 something and two 7. somethings. If you can lower yours that much by losing weight maybe I can too.
Maybe ask your doctor about Forxiga. It works by causing you to pee out extra sugar, It’s also known for causing weight loss. You can search and learn about it on Google. I’ve been on it for years now.
Yeah, that is something to keep an eye on. Diet, exercise and weight loss can help, along with the right medicine.
If it puts your mind at ease I had readings of 8 and 9 for many years and I never suffered any consequences from that. So your one reading above 7 probably won’t lead to any health problems. But a high A1C over the long term will lead to problems…eventually.
My doctor told me the reason why weight loss is so important is that fat cells absorb insulin. The fatter you are the more insulin is absorbed and so your blood sugar levels go higher. That was also part of the reason why I became insulin resistant, instead of lowering my blood sugar it was being absorbed by all the fat in my body.
