Is clozapine really the best AP?

I hear they use it as #1 gold standard in the UK. I also saw a great video on YouTube that this woman fully recovered taking it. They said here in the US its not widely used… if its that great then why isnt so many others on it??

It’s not widely used because of serious side effects like a low white blood cell count.

Why is clozapine prescribed?

Clozapine was approved in 1989 for managing treatment-resistant schizophrenia after demonstrating better efficacy than chlorpromazine. However, the adverse effects of neutropenia ( white blood cell count [ WBC ] <3,000/μL) and agranulocytosis (ANC <500/μL3) leading to death were reported in later studies.

I hear a lot of good things, and I’m considering trying it (my old psychiatrist wanted me to give it a go). The one thing that occurs to me though, is that it’s a pretty old medicine. There are so many newer ones, and if the newer ones aren’t improvements over the existing ones, then what’s the point of even making them?

For me, for positive symptoms I think aripiprazole has been very good so far.
I just don’t like how my hair has been thinning.

Etc

Are you symptoms free

Have you tried Abilify @LovelyCreature?
That’s always a pretty safe choice.

Doctors like prescribing it because of its positive safety record.

It has helped me a lot. :t_rex::t_rex::t_rex:

I’m not sure whether clozapine helped or not

Im thinking of getting the shot since im not very compliant every day. How long did it take to get some relief from symptoms? Does it help paranoia or intrusive thoughts?

Yeah im thinking of the shot

What do you mean positive safety record?

Im bipolar though… will it trigger mania ta think?

The first time they put me on a big dose and it took like 1 to 2 months for the voices to go. However I had been psychotic for a long time 8 months.

The second time I went on a small dose after 2 weeks of psychosis and the voices went in one week.

I still get a bit of paranoia and yes intrusive thoughts haven’t gone away.

What are your intrusive thoughts about? Does abilify make you manic at all? I hear it causes alot of anxiety so im scared of that as well

Its the gold standard in Canada. I gather its not widely used because 70% of schizophrenics dont think they have the illness so they wont take it properly which can lead to complications including worsening psychosis. I took it for a while, 3 months and the side effects were pretty harsh. After taking my low dose of it I felt like I had one of those shots they give in psych wards to calm down patients that are currently a harm to others.

Btw I know the vidéo you’re talking about. Ive been wanting to watch it again but cant find it, could you link it?

Yes I get quite a bit of anxiety. It’s just in terms of positive symptoms it’s been working or so my cpn says that it’s due to this ap.
It’s not really mania it’s more a feeling of agitation, irritability and short attention span.
I’d rather not say what my intrusive thoughts are about.

Yeah same as mine are terrible. Hugs.

Abilify is a pretty safe med.
For a lot of people it’s weight neutral and it even lowers prolactin levels.

Some people say it makes them crazier
